New Computer set up.

Postby Bsuds » Dec 26th, 2020, 9:03 am

For any of you that may have received a new computer from Santa you might want to check this out.

https://www.pcworld.com/article/3040361 ... puter.html

Some helpful hints there.

Some of you Techies might not agree 100% but for the most part it's good advise.

There is no need to pay for it to be set up at the store. A waste of money IMO.

If you need help I'm sure some on here will be available to do that.

It's pretty basic stuff. The trick is to not get anxious over being asked questions as you go along like "do you wish to proceed"?

Most of it is automatic.

Happy to help where I can if anybody needs a question answered.

NVMe drive has arrived and the desktop is finally in Calgary at Purolator.

Hopefully I will soon be locked in my Computer room setting it all up!

It's amazing that a 500gb NVMe SSD is smaller than a RAM chip and less money than I paid for a 1 megabyte chip for my Tandy 1000 back in the days.

LOL, I'm buying it with my money. If she wants a new computer she has her own.

I don't use her Cricut or her sewing machines.

If I had the money from all her quilting supplies and cricut supplies I could buy a whack of computers and not just 1. lol

lol.
Your 500GB NVMe SSD is cheaper than the NEC V20 I bought 36 years ago to replace an 8088.

Of course the value of the dollar has changed too. But what you get for similar dollars now is amazingly more.

Absolutely.
500GB is more than enough too. Buying it separately is the way to go since integrators still charge an arm and a leg for flash memory. Some models of the Surface Pro, i5, 8GB RAM, going from 128GB to next model up with 256GB changes the price by $300. Pricing on flash is still nuts.

It showed up shortly after my earlier post.

All the updates are done and now need to install the SSD and move the OS over.

Well that was fun...not! :-X

The cloning program I used messed me up and didn't clone the way it should have so I spent all day today fixing that little snafu.

It is now booting to the SSD I installed and next will be copying files and loading the programs I like using.

There is light at the end of the tunnel and as long as it's not a train coming at me I'm good to go.

Did you come out of the cloning war with any interesting tidbits of advice. What do you think happened in the cloning process that failed?

Fast isn’t it! The only disadvantage of an SSD is they can’t be repaired as easily as the old platter drives but they sure are fast, especially the PCIe 4.0 SSD NVMe if your motherboard will use it.

The problem was that when I did the clone it didn't copy the MBR. So when I went to change the boot sequence it didn't show up as an option. I thought it was a BIOS issue but was wrong.

After re-doing the cloning process everything worked as it should.

Everything is blazing fast now!
