Re: Is there a inexpensive internet provider out there
The phone is great so far. No lag issues. I still miss Call Control.
Grandstream told me they will consider adding it to their next HT802 firmware release but couldn't promise me anything. Lots of settings in the ATA HT802. Lightspeed warned me I can change any setting I want to at my own risk.
I'm still looking for a compatible modem to purchase used. I'm paying $2.95/m to rent a Arris SUFRboard SB6141. Anything on Lightspeeds "Use Your Own Modem" approved list is either obsolete, not available or too expensive. At $185 new for the SB6141 I'm better off renting!

Reading posts here I have decided to try Lightspeed later this month. I will be doing the $2.95 rent-a modem as well. Hope they are as good as touted.

I am with https://can-com.com/Bundles/Internet-TV-Phone-Bundles
While their internet prices are not as cheap, although close but cheaper than shaw, they offer no fee modems, modem/router rental for $5 (or bring your own router) and no hidden charges. Their home phone package is unlimited canada for $14.95 or unlimited canada/us for $19.95. (price includes voice mail, call waiting, callerID, call blocking) The key here is there are no per-minute charges. I have been with them for 6 years and have yet to have my monthly fee increased unlike shaw/telus

I hope it works out for you Cats! I wouldn't say the service itself will impress you, to me it's the same service as what Shaw provides - it's the price that's good.Catsumi wrote:Reading posts here I have decided to try Lightspeed later this month. As billing has come up a few times, I thought I'd share an example of my bill. This is what your bill would look like after the 1st few months when they've finished messing with it so that you're paying on the same cycle as all their other customers (and paying 1 month in advance). Personally, I don't think it gets simpler than this. The black boxes are where my full home address was shown - hence why they're blacked out. Price has not changed a cent since I 1st signed up approx 3 years ago.

I've never tried it myself, nor have I asked them, but I'm wondering if their telephone modem is portable? By that I mean, can I take my modem to my cabin (w/internet access) and use the same line there? Has anyone tried this? Just curious. Talking about Lightspeed.

Don't ask me what a Dolphin Tel phone adapter is! All I got is the Grandstream ATA.As an extra bonus you can travel with your Dolphin Tel phone adapter. Bring your adapter anywhere you have access to a high speed internet connection. Plug it in and use your phone just like you are at home. What a great option for vacation homes and RV’s!
Your paying $3.50/m for the modem rental? Their site says $2.95/m, that's what I'm paying before taxes.TylerM4 wrote:As billing has come up a few times, I thought I'd share an example of my bill. If anyone is interested, there's lots of used Arris SUFRboard SB6141 modems for sale for under $20 in Ontario if your into Kijiji. Seems Teksavvy uses the same modem as well. $15 for a used modem plus $15 for shipping might be worth the gamble.

Quoted $2.95 for me. Maybe Tyler got the ritzy racing stripes model?

Yeah, I also noticed that. Getting billed $0.55 more a month than I should be! $6.60 a year!

If the modem rental is cheap, I like to rent. Mostly because I've found in the past that ISP's like to blame the modem for problems. If it's their modem I'm using and they think it's a modem problem, they need to send a replacement or troubleshoot the modem. I usually rent a cheaper no frills non-wireless model and buy a decent wireless router to put behind it.

Re: Is there a inexpensive internet provider out there
So, we ended up switching to Lightspeed (thanks to TylerM4 for answering a couple of noob questions
)
We were with Shaw before, we had the TV/Internet package for $120/month even though we never used the TV. Just the internet was $105/month for the *cough cough* "cheapest" unlimited data plan.
Signed up with LS on Thursday for the 75Mbps plan for $49.95/month (only $39.95/month if you opt for the 12 month contract) and renting a modem for $2.95/month. Within minutes of signing up, they called to confirm all the details and sent out the modem via Canada Post the same day.
First bill was $130 for first month service, one month deposit, modem rental, modem delivery charge and taxes - which was all explained on the phone.
Called Shaw to terminate our services with them on Friday, and darn they were quick, shut the service down exactly at the stroke of midnight
Got the new modem in the mail today (Monday), hooked it up and everything was good to go.
See how the next few months go and if all is well, maybe get our own modem and sign up for a 12 month contract.

Re: Is there a inexpensive internet provider out there
Does anyone here have LS voicemail? I don't know how to access my messages, change settings etc. LS voicemail kicks in before my answering machine does. Zero information came with the service. No FAQ or help on LS. I emailed tech support a few times but no reply.

Re: Is there a inexpensive internet provider out there
Not as though there's much on TV anyways :-) I checked it out. Don't let the name lightspeed fool you, it has nothing to do with a reduced calorie service and they go all the way up to an inexpensive 1000Mbps plan. Holy megabits Batman. I'm considering it myself.OKkayak wrote: We were with Shaw before, we had the TV/Internet package for $120/month even though we never used the TV.
