I have their modem (w/o wi-fi), but I have my own router, with both wireless and wired access. Other than my work computer and the surveillance system, all other devices are wireless, including TV and a plethora of automation gadgets. 150Mbps service, but I routinely get download speeds in excess of 200. Never had a bandwidth issue.
Thanks, BC Landlord (and the rest of you) for all the helpful info.

Looks like I can't use the ZyXEL modem/router I bought from Telus if I switch to Lightspeed as my modem, so I'd have to buy or rent. Lightspeed sells modems that look like they are also routers, but I was interested in the suggestion earlier in this thread that we may be better off renting the modem, because the provider is responsible.

Found this online:
We recommend using a separate modem and router, if you can. Since modem technology changes slowly, you can usually use a modem for years, until it breaks, but you might need to replace a router because you want better coverage, because you’ve added more devices to your network and your old router isn’t keeping up, or because you want to take advantage of the latest improvements in Wi-Fi technology. You can often save money on your monthly Internet bill if you buy your own modem and router instead of using the ones your ISP provides, though this is usually true only if you have cable Internet, not DSL or fiber, and the situation is more complicated if you get phone service from your ISP as well.

Also trying to figure out the phone system. If the internet is down, no phone?

Yup, no internet, no phone calls.... but dont most people use cell phones? Landlines are so "old school"

If you want FREE voip gateway from a lightspeed equivalent, then use can-com.com. Their ATA gateway is also free.

That's me - old school. Very old school. Amusingly, I had the best computer on the block back in the 80s, and knew how to program it to do all kinds of things in the DOS days. Pre mouse. Had to type everything in. About the time programs turned into "apps" I got tired of keeping up, and today I often don't even know where my flip phone is.

ATA wha...? Aaaargh, more greek! Tired of keeping up! Waaaaah! :-X

Free sounds good, though, so I'll put on my big girl pants and look into it.

Thanks for the tip.

Oops, replace voip gateway to modem. Regardless, the modem and the ATA gateway are free from can-com.com.

Wired is always a better experience. I only use Wifi if getting the wire to the location is a major challenge, or if I really need to mobility wifi offers (Tablets, smart phones, etc.)

I'm a big fan of powerline ethernet equipment for when running some CAT6E isn't an option.

I thought resellers were paying to piggyback.

FYI All. Don't be surprised if lightspeed pushes through a price increase as a result.

That would be against what they are marketing. This is the pitch ...
Forever Prices - What you pay at each
month now is the same price later as our

Then they won't be in business much longer if they lose money every month after their costs go up!

Yes, it'll be interesting to see where this goes. That is indeed their pitch, however it was made at a time when the CRTC had set laws saying the price paid by resellers can't increase.

Honestly, tho - prices for bulk bandwidth should never go up. As technology improves costs drop. It would be interesting to understand how these companies were able to convince the CRTC that prices have actually increased.

There is a lot of political pressure from the NDP and Conservatives to reverse this decision. The liberals campaigned on lower telecom service costs last election. Oh well. I suppose we will have to wait 10 years for 6G in order to have 1Tbps speeds at mobile prices. Edholm's Law is bandwidth and data rates double every 18 months. We need some laws for pricing ;-)

If the liberals don't listen, at least we are all consoled knowing the internet is no longer $4 an hour on dial-up :-)

Anything fishy, they will hear from me.

I know how to raise a stink. :200:
My modem died on July 7 after 2 1/2 months useage. Lightspeed is sending me a new one, unfortunately they only use Canada Post. Not sure when it will arrive.

At least while i am at lake resort, i have wifi access.

I am somewhat disappointed that they don’t use a courier service.
