Talk about a monopoly that Canada is going to let happen.

Good bye competition. When too many media corporations own all the news coverage, and independent news outlets get smeared and blocked for "fake news" allegations, backed by social media giants, Big Tech, we know we will have nothing left.
Regardless of who "wins" an election, they always are up against a Silent Elite. Do you believe the extreme poor who voted for Trump ever thought their non-profit support would be slashed right out from under them?

Interesting corporate double speak. Merging is providing "increased competition."

Regulatory approval for the takeover deal shouldn't be a problem. "Who you know" helps get even the most egregious business deals done, and oligarchies seem to be the theme of the day under this government.

Didn't Shaw just take over Global Media / Corus a few years ago to become the biggest media conglomerate in Canada? So is that what Rogers will now become?
Agreed this is becoming a monopoly. Don't we have a competition bureau? Canada already has the highest cell phone rates in the world ... this is not a good move for consumers.

Re: Rogers to take over Shaw
And who is going to say "no" to $40 bucks for shares currently at $20 bucks?
Here's the actual quote:
"Under the plan, Rogers will pay holders of Shaw's class A and B shares $40.50 in cash per share, while the Shaw family will receive some of their payment in Rogers shares.
Shaw's Class B shares closed at $23.90 on the Toronto Stock Exchange on Friday.<snip>"
Only the wealthy holders who see Big Tech/Media merging as a evil thing will not sell out. So one one, they will all sell out. The Shaw Family is remaining as part of the oligraphy I see, taking Roger's Shares as part payment.
Interesting that the founder of Shaw died in March 2020 at age 85. He must be rolling in his grave seeing the blood/sweat and tears company he built up now been sold to the competition by the family he probably left a fortune to anyways.

This is putting a new spin on "who shot JR". Seriously, did the lawyers settle the multibillion dollar Estate in less than year?

Does Rogers provide cable TV or high speed internet in Kelowna? If not then this has no impact on competition. Shaw has minimal mobile business.

Re: Rogers to take over Shaw
I just had some Telus Witnesses come by last week to sell me on their service. I've been happy with Shaw for the last 16 years and there wasn't anything they could try and get me with, but I discharged Rogers from my quorum of service providers years ago for reasons I won't get into. As much as I'm not fond of thinking about it I might have to invite those TWs into the foyer next time for a longer chat.typhoon44 wrote:Does Rogers provide cable TV or high speed internet in Kelowna? Rogers buying Shaw might impact the competition by driving customers to them.

According to their web site, they offer Wireless, Digital Cable TV, High Speed Internet, Home Phone and Smart Home Monitoring in Kelowna. Whether all services are available right now is another question.typhoon44 wrote:Does Rogers provide cable TV or high speed internet in Kelowna? If not then this has no impact on competition. Corus was formed in 1999 as a spin-off from Shaw Communications.DarbyD wrote:Didn't Shaw just take over Global Media / Corus a few years ago to become the biggest media conglomerate in Canada? So is that what Rogers will now become?

And at the same time as this story hits the headlines, here's another Rogers story.
https://www.cbc.ca/news/business/rogers ... -1.5944348
The family of a 91-year-old woman is outraged Rogers had demanded she pay hundreds of dollars for failing to return phone and internet equipment while her Ottawa long-term care home was under lockdown.
What did show up was a bill for the unreturned equipment — more than $450 which, by this month, had grown to almost $565.
Yup, can hardly wait for the first Rogers Witness to come knocking.![:haha: [icon_lol2.gif]](./images/smilies/icon_lol2.gif)
