Various blood types

Post by Jlabute »

I learned this week that there are various types of blood on earth. Not all vertebrates/animals have iron based hemoglobin to carry oxygen to their bodies. Some have proteins based on copper called hemocyanin which includes several species of octopus and crustaceans and arthropods, etc. These species tend to have blue blood. Copper based blood helps such animals to survive in cold temperatures.

"We're taking a little bit of blood, but rather than us being the vampires to the bats we're making them give us their secrets," she says.
Those secrets are tantalizing.
Bats not only live longer than other animals of their size, they also stay healthy longer and can harbor pathogens like Ebola or coronaviruses without getting sick.
I want to have some bat blood.
Why use a big word when a diminutive one will suffice.

^^^ very cool.

The "Green Tree Skink" from New Guinea has green blood. In nature, blood comes in a rainbow of colors.
