Best time to buy a TV

Post by Babba_not_Gump »

I'm in need of a newer, bigger and smarter TV.

I hear the best time to buy one is during Black Friday sales and just before Super Bowl, which makes sense.

But my question is this, are TVs really priced that much lower during these sales?
I'm posting this from Traditional lands of the British Empire & the current Lands of The Dominion of Canada.

Depends on the brand/model. Manufacturers know those are some of the best times to dump refurbished, low-end, low rated and models nearing EOL. Doorbuster deals around Christmas time is notorious for this. Most shoppers just see the name Samsung and LG and assume it's quality, they don't take any time to research a particular model. I'm not saying you can't find a great deal around these times but from my experience I've never seen a highly rated model on sale around Christmas stacked up at the entrance of Canadian Tire, Rona or Walmart. Check TV review sites before you buy. RTINGS.com is a great unbiased site. They put every TV they review through the exact same tests. I've had a few minor annoyances with TVs in the past and their reviews on them were spot-on.

Black Friday sales are coming . Check out Visions. One of the few places you can still barter for a better price and they now match costcos 2 year warranty

How big, how new, and now smart? lol.

I bought a new TV from V****** a month ago because they will barter a deal however so small. Most places offer a price protection policy so if the price goes below what you paid within 60 days, the difference is returned. I paid a chunk of cash (sale price @ $700 off)... only to see it plunge to a super-deal of $1300 off the next day. I got the difference back.

The best picture quality is from an OLED. Although, some Sony mini-LED TVs are extraordinarily good. I wouldn't consider anything else if you're spending big bux. Any new generation OLED panel TV or a Sony mini-LED TV.

I'm leaning towards Samsung, 55" to 60". I don't think I can go any wider than 60" where the TV will be mounted.
Our last two TVs were Samsung and never had an issue. Same with their phones and tablets. So it's a brand I'm comfortable with. Also, Consumer Reports rates Samsung pretty high.

And we won't be spending big bux.
Right now the lowest is about $750, but I'll have to go higher to get the quality picture we want. Not sure how high, $1500 maybe but I want to have enough left over for a sound bar.

Locally I've priced out Costco, Visions and Best Buy, they all have about the same prices.

I'll watch the Black Friday sales first off, and see just what models they're unloading. If there's nothing there that meets my specs, then Boxing Day. After that, Super Bowl.

I’ve had my Samsung now for just over 10 years still works as it did when I first plugged it in.

I'd suggest going for a Samsung QLED Neo. I found a 65" for about $1300 on sale several months back and I'm very pleased with the picture quality. Much more detail than the Samsung QLED that I replaced.

I also find them a reliable brand and have used them for computer parts, monitors, cell phone, and my TV. Haven't ever had any issues with Samsung to date.

55” is a great size. Sony and Samsung both make great TVs. In the price range you are looking there are lots of options. Sony has the better processing and does up-scaling better than Samsung. Sony uses Android for its smart features if that makes any difference. Sony TVs are known for their color accuracy, while Samsung pushes more for vibrance. When you see that Sony can do so much better with fewer dimming zones on a mini-led, one gets respect for them.

Both TVs will last you 10 years. Visions will give you two years of warranty so long as you sign up to get their e-flyers.

The X90L would be a good TV. This video is somewhat technical but important to watch if you want a TV that displays the most faithful image, whipping Samsung butt. I like this youtube channel HDTVTest for its technical overviews. A lot of things that rtings misses.

True but not necessarily the smart features. OP mentioned smarter. For example, Samsung stopped updating the firmware and apps on my 2017 TV four years ago. Now the web browser doesn't open and the apps are either out-of-date or obsolete and no support for new apps. My wireless keyboards never worked from day one, most keys don't register. Known bug. Try searching in YouTube without a "a" and "e" key! Same keyboards work great with my LG TV. So the electronics may last 10+ years but manufacturers can quickly make a TV obsolete by canceling support for the smart features. ... Years ago you chucked a TV because the flyback transformer died, now you toss it because it doesn't have Disney+ or Pluto TV! [icon_lol2.gif]

For $50 or less you can add something like a Fire TV stick and save a whack of money.

Yes, that is a good point. I've used a PS4/PS5 for my smarts so I've rarely cared about the TV smarts. The TVs I've had varied in application quality and availability. Might it be better to get a TV with a more standard O/S? Android? Not sure if Tizen, or WebOS is better.

Previous TVs (OLED) were LG. I found the speakers on the B7 left a lot to be desired with quite low maximum volumes. The Sony I have now is much better for TV speaker sound. (If anyone were to care)

I still think Sony is a premium, but you do get what a purist seeks.

That too may be a good option. I believe the Fire Stick is still based on the Android OS? Same as the Sony TVs.

On-sale. Talk to them a little and I am sure they'll drop it a little further too.

I would suggest, look at Costco. Hisense brand is always reasonably priced. Best time? Out of the shopping craze time, such as black friday, boxing day, and such.

I was going to say the same. I have a ROKU, as well as a decent 4K Bluray player. I access Amazon Prime and Netflix through the Bluray player, and anything else I need, like Paramount+ at times, or Disney+ I can get through the ROKU.

It may just be me, but I felt that Prime and Netflix were much smoother, and better looking, through my Panasonic Bluray than using the smart TV apps.

Were it up to me I'd simply own a 65" decent quality monitor, but these days every TV is a smart TV. I don't use the sound, or smart apps of the TV, as I use a high quality Yamaha Aventage Receiver surround system for sound, and Roku, Bluray, or Telus Optic, for all the other stuff.

ETA: For what it's worth Hisense is Chinese and I wouldn't touch it with a ten foot pole. Son had one and regretted it. I looked at reviews also and for the most part they were less than flattering. Sometimes there's just an obvious reason that something costs less.

First time I came across Hisense TVs was over ten years ago when Home Depot had them on sale a week before Christmas. According to wiki the current logo has been around since 2012. TCL is another TV brand I'm leery of. Amazon really pushes it.

Yes add-ons like Fire TV stick are great but not everyone knows about them. My Samsung TV doesn't support 4K so I'll probably end up putting it out to pasture anyways.
