Cable TV?
In the lights of Netflix and other streaming content, is anyone watching cable anymore? If so, why? Myself, for news I use internet, and for entertainment Netflix, Amazon Prime, or other streaming channels. TVs in my home are pretty much computer monitors.

Re: Cable TV?
I have way too many services. A large Shaw package, Netflix, Prime, Disney, and Apple.
The (now) entire industry (broadcast [although now only on cable]), and steaming services are doing the same thing, the cable industry did years ago. A few "must have" shows, mixed with junk.
It used to be (other than the standard networks) cable created packages of 4-6 or so, spectialty stations, of which the normal person only wanted one station in the package, but to get the total 6-8 desired specialty stations that they really wanted they had to subscribe to many packages.
Now, especially CBS, but others as well, will start a desirable series on their "broadcast" channel, then either after a few episodes or after a season or two, move it to their steaming channel. SEAL Team is an example, they started it on CBS then moved it to Paramount (now back to CBS). Another was "The Good Fight", 2017 - 20 on CBS then moved to Paramount+. Prime showed many season of Yellowstone, then it was moved to Paramount.
It's a crap shoot as to which TV shows aired on CBS will be moved to Paramount+ to fleece more cash from viewer's pockets once they are hooked on a show.

Re: Cable TV?
I haven't had cable or satellite TV for about 8 years now. Just Netflix, Crave and Prime. I switch up Crave with Disney every few months. Prime stays because I use the free shipping. The shows are a bonus.

If you don't mind paying, that's fine with me. I indulge in some other stuff , but when it comes to paying bills vs benefits, I'm very pragmatic.my5cents wrote: ↑Dec 24th, 2023, 10:50 am I have way too many services. A large Shaw package, Netflix, Prime, Disney, and Apple.

Re: Cable TV?
Too many commercials on cable TV, I shut it off! I watch free streaming services now like Pluto TV and Tubi and I've got DTV for local news and Global TV shows. I'm still watching some commercials but at least I'm not paying for it. With cable TV there was so many commercials thrown in I'd forget what I was even watching and it seemed like they had the channels purposely synced so you couldn't miss a commercial if you tried! ![:haha: [icon_lol2.gif]](./images/smilies/icon_lol2.gif)

I guess the majority of the TV I watch is cable, but I haven't watched anything live for years. I skip ahead through all the commercials.
A hockey game takes about an hour to watch (three 20 minute periods), one hour TV shows, 45 minutes.

Exactly, we rarely watch anything "live". Except the News.

I tape most news as well, and IF I watch the CHBC news (usually just the ½ hour version), I have to record it so I can skip Pee Wee Herman doing the weather.

Re: Cable TV?
Oh don't start me on the NHL! I enjoyed watching hockey until Gary Bettman turned that game into an advertising money making machine with his annoying regional digitally enhanced dasherboard ads and sports betting commercials featuring you know who (Wayne Gretzky) and live popup ads. Now I hear he's going it add digital jersey ad placements! ... And I was paying Shaw $220 for Center Ice on top of my monthly plan just to watch endless commercials.
Before I cut cable TV, stations were running ads for Crave, CBC gem, Netflix and Pluto TV “Stream Now. Pay Never.” When I cut Shaw cable after being a customer for eons they didn't care at all. Maybe the Shaw family saw the writing on the wall and ran.

Re: Cable TV?
Just got an email from Amazon, saying they are introducing "limited advertisements" in their Prime videos. Unless you pay extra, of course. It makes me thinking of cancelling the subscription.
Dear Prime member,
We are writing to you today about an upcoming change to your Prime Video experience. Starting February 5, Prime Video movies and TV shows will include limited advertisements. This will allow us to continue investing in compelling content and keep increasing that investment over a long period of time. We aim to have meaningfully fewer ads than traditional TV and other streaming TV providers. No action is required from you, and there is no change to the current price of your Prime membership. We will also offer a new ad-free option for an additional $2.99 per month* that you can sign up for here.

I have Prime mostly for the free shipping and do not intend on cancelling it.
We watch Prime Video on occasion, but not enough to be worried about ads.
