I particularly liked this example as it's a technology that does work - it just didn't have the impact that the hype said it would.

I remember the articles - everybody would commute via Segway. urban roads would give way to narrower "Segway lanes", sidewalks would mostly go away, etc.

e-scooters have gotten us closer to that vision than the technology in the Segway.

When it comes to new technologies (and I'm all for that), the only real test is the (level of) adoption.

The Hyperloop !!!

"A “cross between a Concorde and a railgun and an air hockey table.” That was how Elon Musk described plans for Hyperloop, a “fifth mode of transport” that he unveiled to the world after months of teasing in 2013. The original whitepaper outlined a system of pressurized tubes that would propel pods across the country at speeds of 700 MPH. But the document proved to be little more than an elaborate back-of-the-napkin sketch, with engineers and transport experts pointing out serious structural problems in the plan, and noting that costs had been drastically underestimated. "

...it's not a dead concept... but players are slowly stopping development, except for Hyperloop One. Although they are far behind their goals and have only achieved 172Km/h with passengers & 387Km/h unmanned... but those numbers are well below the 1200Km/h they set their goal at. I'd say one day, maybe?
