Aurora Borealis
Social media is buzzing this morning with photos of a spectacular display of northern lights last night. Apparently a series of massive solar flares over the past couple of days have led to an intense geomagnetic storm that has the northern lights visible at much lower latitudes than normal. Much more colourful and active than the ho-hum pale green ones we see occasionally, it will be worth venturing outdoors tonight around eleven or midnight as more of the same is forecast.

Yup, pretty amazing.Must have been especially nice further north. Five CMEs occured. Apparently NASA says that not all CMEs travel at the same speed... so some can merge, over-take, or gobble them up. lol. Looks like the weekend will be good watching time too.

The Cannibal CME is expected to arrive on May 11th. It alone could spark a strong (G3) geomagnetic storm. With two more CMEs following close behind, storm levels could become extreme (G4), sparking auroras at mid- to low-latitudes across Europe and the USA.

Having spent so time at different latitudes to the north, ir was my experience that the best displays occurred along the 60th parallel, and that the farther you moved either north or south of that, the less colourful and active the displays became. I saw displays near Whitehorse that were almost violent in their activity, so much so you'd expect them to make noise.

It was my first time seeing them. Drove out to the bush to get away from light pollution. It was pretty magical. You could almost feel them.

Strong aurora do make noise. Hisses and cracks and whistles. You'll have to get away from city noises. They are rare but do make noise.fluffy wrote: ↑May 11th, 2024, 7:33 am Having spent so time at different latitudes to the north, ir was my experience that the best displays occurred along the 60th parallel, and that the farther you moved either north or south of that, the less colourful and active the displays became. Yes, i did hear them years ago, at a very quiet lake. Still shivers me.

My mother in law down in Lake Havasu City, AZ says she could see them there too. Crazy!
