Kelowna: All Candidate Forums

Post by Giardinera1 »

Here's what we have so far for opportunities to pose our questions to the candidates. Please note, to stay on track some forums are only taking questions submitted in advance rather than doing open mic. Please add if I've missed any!

1) When: October 2, 7:00 - 9:00 pm Where: Rutland Centennial Hall - 180 Rutland Road North Host: Rutland Residents Association Details: Doors Open at 7:00. A hand out of the general issues will be distributed before questions are taken - open mic style I believe.

2) When: October 9, 9:00 Where: Centre for Learning Atrium, Okanagan College 1000 KLO Road Host: Okanagan College Student Union Details: Geared towards students. No tickets being sold.

3) When: October 10, 4:00 - 6:30 Where: Rotary Centre of the Arts 421 Cawston Host: Arts Council of the Central Okanagan Details: Free Tickets available in Advance through Eventbrite. Questions submitted in advance via an online form you can find here:

4) When: October 17, 7:00-9:00 Where: Rutland Centennial Hall - 180 Rutland Road North Host: Central Okanagan Early Years Partnership and BC Poverty Reduction Coalition Details: Doors open at 7:00. Submit questions before hand.

5) TBD: Kelowna Chamber of Commerce approx. second week of October - They have not confirmed the details yet.
The Chamber said they will post questions and responses from all candidates on its website and the page will likely go live Sept. 28, but nothing on the site yet, so maybe it's for members only.

Please add if I've missed any!

A little bit more detail about the All Candidates Forum hosted by the Rutland Residents Association can be found on their website on the Events page:

No, there will not be an open mic. The public is free to go to the tables of each candidate and talk one on one with them. This is the same format that was used 4 years ago and was well attended.

Exactly, right, talking with each one individually saves any embarassment should a citizen ask a question that may resonate with others. It might make it awkward for the candidate if he/she is put on the spot by an intelligent citizen.

Tomorrow evening, Oct 2nd, starting at 7 pm, at Rutland Centennial Hall you can take the opportunity to ask your questions directly to each candidate.

No to speed dating. An open forum with open mic is the way to go.

Rutland Residents Association is hosting a venue where people can go and talk personally to the candidates. They aren't in a privacy booth, everyone around them will hear the conversations. There are other forums that maybe are closer to what you seem to want.

The Rutland Residents Association (RRA) is a volunteer organization that does not have a lot of funds, they are hosting this for the benefit of the community. They arranged the forum this way because it was well attended last time and people appreciated how it was set up.

Why don't you join the RRA, then next election you can help us make a decision for the how the next forum or event we hold is run?

May I remind the good people of Rutland.

'City of Kelowna council fails to stand up for Rutland again'

The Daily Courier, September 21, 2017

'How City of Kelowna council voted on addict housing'

The Daily Courier, August 28, 2018

"I am prepared to lose votes" - Colin Basran

And may that wish come true. Currently, Basran & Company are attempting another addict housing powerplay. This time in Kelowna at 2025 Agassiz Road, a largely senior neighborhood, supplemented with young families.

Let's unelect Basran, DeHart, Donn, Stack, Given, with good due diligence voting for others.

All the more reason to come out and ask questions, check out the candidates running in competition ... make it a great All Candidates Forum if you do that. Yeah!

Freedom's Door was a largely unpopular decision. But however tough it is for some people to come to terms with it, it is part of the solution to Kelowna's drug addiction and homelessness problem.

These aren't solutions. Closer to calamities, parking them in a revolving door system. Many locations chosen are appalling choices. Near seniors, young families, daycares, and involve no serious rehab. Drug injecting for the rest of their lives at taxpayer expense.

Okay, let's not stray too far into this topic. There is already a thread for that. Thanks!

I went to the Rutland All Candidate Forum. It was quite interesting.

I am very impressed with Amarjit Singh Lalli, Loyal Woolridge, and Gord Lovegrove for councillors.

I was also very impressed after speaking with Joachim Nierfeld (running for Trustee).

I suggest you check them out.

I think it was a great turn out at the Rutland Residents Association, lots of people interacting and checking out the different candidates. Hopefully all of the other All Candidate Forums go as well and it will help people make an informed decision of who they want to vote for.

Please share with us what impressed you about those 3 candidates. They also happen to be 3 of the ones on my radar.
