Ndp announcing a ship building plan. Are you serious??

Does anyone not remember the last ships the ndp built?

250 million over the already 250 mil budget. They never went into service and were sold off for 25 million. And they wanna do it again.

Jobs are good. The thin air is laden with cheap cash just waiting to be printed and I'd rather see that going into infrastructure and the creation of long term industries than divided up by business owners to support failing business plans.

We can't all sell each other private insurance and keep flipping houses with dirty money from offshore.

But yeah.... Remember the 80's [icon_lol2.gif]

Is that your way of saying you support throwing taxpayer money down the drain?

Nope.

My way of saying we have a coast that connects us to the world and the 80's were 30 to 40 years ago. We've bought several ships from Germany since then, and we've lost out on a few federal tenders due to our lack of infrastructure to support the industry.

If I wanted to throw money down the drain I'd support cutting the PST and giving everyone a year to buy a new tax free Sea Ray, rather than help an industry that could compete in that market.

Do you have something against people that work for a living?

I have every respect for hard working. What I have zero respect for is the free loaders and socialists that the ndp pander to for their votes.

I'm all for competitive industry. The ndp is not.

If it's not union you are unable to tender an offer. You tell me. Does that seem fair?

You bring up the dam no one needs. Where do you think electricity is going to come from for all the green initiatives like electric vehicles? If everyone switched to electric cars we would need multiple new dams.

And I think its very funny you steered very clear of the point I was making about how abysmal the shipbuilding the ndp did years ago. About how the ndp turned 500 mil into 25 mil by building 3 fast ferries no one wanted or needed that never even got put into service and sold for scrap. I sure don't think our province needs that again.

The fast ferries did go into service. I rode on them many times and I also saw the damage they did to the coast. The ships were very nice and well built. The design sucked, but the folks that designed them would never vote NDP in a million years. Gordon Campbell decided to throw the whole industry into the dumpster to make a point about the bad NDP. He could have authorized the sale for many times the amount he ended up dumping them for, but instead parked them in North Vancouver as a :cuss: you to everyone involved.

Since then we buy our ferries from Germany. That was 40 years ago and I don't see an announcement suggesting anyone is going into the fast ferry business. What I see is some money being put towards an industry and workers that the BC Liberals decided were disposable for political gains.

I dont believe the issue is ship building in BC, its the NDP managing it.
The NDP has proven through the decades that they are not able to manage a one person rush on a two hole outhouse.

I have zero respect of free loaders and nothing against wealth. If your for competitive industry, let me ask you this, how do you gain an unfair advantage if everyone has to follow the same terms to bid on a contract? Seems to me what you're really suggesting is that you could thrive if only you could skew the playing field and exploit unorganized labour.

The short answer is yes. It seems fair to require the same thing of everyone.

That's my point exactly. The issue has never been ship building or the people that make their living building ships in BC. With the BC liberals and supporters the issue has always been the NDP.

Cold, short-sighted and politically opportunistic - if you're at all interested in my opinion on it.

The fast ferry scandal was a political affair in the late 1990s relating to the construction of three fast ferries by the Canadian provincial crown corporation BC Ferries under direction of the Executive Council of British Columbia, headed at the time by Premier Glen Clark of the New Democratic Party.
.

In addition to major delays and cost overruns, the ferries never fully met their original specifications, and only operated briefly in a reduced capacity, before being auctioned off at a substantial loss.

So while operating briefly and reduced capacity you rode them many times. Eh. They were only in service from June of 99 till Mar of 2000. And they started construction in 1996 not the 80s. And they were removed from service in 2000. So 20 years ago not 40.

Exactly. We should have a ship building industry. Just not one run by the ndp

How is it fair to require only union companies are allowed to tenure a bid. Unions had their place in time. Today they breed sloth and complacency. As having worked in union and non union shops I was treated better and paid better in the non union ones. And my co-workers were way more productive in the non union shops aswell
