Interesting exercise. To get a better gauge of how this fire season compares to previous ones I used the news as a comparison. ie... how much were wildfires making the news this day this year vs this day in previous years, I went to https://web.archive.org/ which is a fascinating website where you can search archived web pages going back many years for just about any website, including Castanet. When you pick a day like yesterday (July 31st) for example, and look at Castanet's homepage for that day, say last year, or back in 2017, which was such a bad wildfire season and compare how many 'fire' related stories were on the page then vs this year, it's interesting. Also more interesting (or troubling) is that most of the dedicated news to wildfires on the Castanet homepage didn't really pick up until mid-Aug. We're still two weeks from that date! Could the worst be yet to come?

Here are a couple of examples. You see end of July 2017 and last year, 3 stories and 2 stories respectively. This year, 6 stories! August 19, 2017, there were 4.

In this example from 2017, there were 4 stories (but three I believe were about the same fires near Vernon). Same period this year there were 6 and all different fires.

Anyway, just found it interesting to look back.

Does it seem like in one day everything just changed?

Yup.

There's a nice weather system moving north with centre of it seemingly over the Fraser canyon. Hopefully it dumps enough rain to slow the fires in that area.
Other parts of that system are touching on the Thompson Shuswap and Okanagan.
We had a light shower lasting ten minutes at my place.

It smells like a wet campfire outside.

There's a storm coning in from the N.E., bringing hope to me and family's in Westwold {white rock lake} fire.

I think the rain will cool things down for a bit. Will give the wildfire service a chance to catch their breath.

Unfortunately, I don't think this round will be here long enough to complain about. Maybe a few of Mexican monsoon stragglers will popup this evening and offer a little more precip, but that comes at a price. The long range forecast offers some relief and I do see the potential for things to change up a bit.

This fire season is far from over.

We’ve been getting rainfall for last hour in Vernon.

Sufficiently advanced incompetence is indistinguishable from malice. There’s a certain point at which ignorance becomes malice, at which there is simply no way to become THAT ignorant except deliberately and maliciously.
