German study showed that 90% of plastics in the oceans comes from just 10 rivers 8 in Asia and 2 in Africa, so unless those countries stop their dumping nothing we do in the west makes any difference. https://www.scientificamerican.com/arti ... he-oceans/

Maybe part of the solution should be to get the manufacturers to quit with the plastic. The amount is plastic wrapped items that fill the grocery store, clothing store, electronics store is ridiculous. Why are individual rolls of toilet paper wrapped in plastic? Why are electronic goods put in plastic? Why are cardboard boxes of facial tissue wrapped in plastic? And don’t get me started on disposable diapers. What did we do before plastic?

Government’s don’t want to stop the production of plastic
It’s one of the biggest taxable income from manufactured products
Governments don’t care about the environment
Even though they and their families live in it

Plant-based plastics are going to be the future. They already exist, but if I had to guess I'd bet 10 years from now we're all moving to biodegradable plant-based plastics on everything. The technology is progressing quickly and it's such a no-brainer.

Disposal is the issue. Do what Japan does and use an incinerator to generate electricity. Plastics are very useful and not toxic. Other options like paper/cardboard create a lot more emissions and do not work well in many instances like straws. Plastics do NOT need to be banned in North America.monilynno wrote: ↑Nov 29th, 2024, 6:47 am

Ah yes a writer for the plastics industry saying it's ok and can't get in our bodies or cause issues. Wonder where we've seen that before.Jlabute wrote: ↑Nov 29th, 2024, 10:37 amDisposal is the issue. Do what Japan does and use an incinerator to generate electricity. Research and evidence points otherwise and microplastics are found in our bodies.

Sure but don't worry, if it's discovered that microplastics are harmful to people, the government will just sue the plastics industry for a few billion and life will go on. As long as someone's getting paid everything is fine.Tack wrote: ↑Nov 29th, 2024, 10:53 amAh yes a writer for the plastics industry saying it's ok and can't get in our bodies or cause issues.
