Re: Pilot City of Penticton project shows success in leash-optional parks
Glad to see that Okanagan Lake Park is NOT included in the off-leash program. It is utilized by too many groupls throughout the Summer and dogs running wild were tearing up the turf. Now, if you see someone with a dog running off-leash, do report it to Animal Control/Bylaw.
From the Castanet article: "Okanagan Lake Park was part of the pilot project but is not included as a further recommendation, since it is "heavily utilized by park users" and hosts numerous events throughout the year, resulting in significant strain on the turf."
“The increase in dog activity and year-round usage would likely exacerbate the stress on this grass area, particularly during the winter months, making it challenging to restore the turf to its previous health levels given the high tourist influx and frequent large events,”

It should be considered that Okanagan Lake Park be off-leash in the winter months. From October - May it is so cold and there are no tourists, the dog people are the only ones outside using the parks anyways....
