Where we get our news should NOT be funded by government. Period. Defund the CBC and all others.

Remember folks it's your local liberal idiots that made news sharing banned. Watch the Facebook and Joe Rogan podcast that just came out. It explicitly states that the government told Facebook to only say the vaccine was good and delete anything that was protested against it. This is absolutely crazy. How can we trust the government when they only want us to hear one side. Disgusting!

The irony is delicious, St-Onge says that as Musk owns X it's not an independent source. CBC has been supporting JT and is heavily and directly supported by JT's government. How independent is that? The only thing she's worried about is getting fact-checked herself, Libs, if they didn't have double standards they'd have none at all.

Very sad when Liberals think they should control all news and promote the CBC because they control it, with 1.5 billion a year of tax dollars.

Things sure have changed since the days of CHBC.
I remember a time when I'd wake up for school, and watch "Who's Line Is It Anyways", followed by the 8:00 news while i ate my toast. This was when Steve was still doing sports, and they hadn't coined the name "Global" just yet.
The Brunette that used to be the lead news caster on the Vancouver news. Remember those times? When you'd hear the news? Unbiased, fact checked or labelled speculative if it is so?
Slowly, the news team retired and we transitioned to a new breed of new caster. The puppet. The news was mostly factual, with sprinkles of opinion and mis-truths. Slowly, it increased. Now? News it 80% opinion based, 15% purposeful misinformation, and 5% truth that is only used when it can add "credibility" to a mis-truth.
The CBC may not be funded under Pierre Paladeau, but as an example of how our media is run in Canada, have a read: Pierre owns multiple broadcasting networks in Canada. In the USA, all the major networks were bought up in 1997 under 6 names. Thanks Clinton.
In Canada, almost all networks are under a single name.
Who's bias controls Canadian news? A neutral person? Not at all.
Politician/businessman who owns Quebecor, "Quebecor Inc. is a Canadian diversified media and telecommunications company serving Quebec based in Montreal. It was spelled Quebecor in both English and French until May 2012, when shareholders voted to add the acute accent, Québecor, in French only.[3][4][5]
The company was founded in 1965 by Pierre Péladeau and remains run by his family. Quebecor Inc. owns Quebecor Media and formerly owned the printing company Quebecor World."
"Former Prime Minister of Canada Brian Mulroney served as chair of the board before his death in February 2024"
Our media needs to become independent. None of this "state run media".
I have a TIME Magazine book with hundreds of pages that have taught me through several articles that "State Run Media" is usually the wolf in sheeps clothing. Are we to forget the past? Not learn from those mistakes?
Media became a dry, semi fact based propaganda machine in the 1950's and 60's. In the mid 60's, teenagers and young adults "rebelled" against the system and created magazines and independent radio stations. Those stations became huge over time, and now they are the ones at the forefront of stopping new independent media from forming.
Isn't that amazing?

CBC is the main source of misinformation, followed closely by Global and CTV

Right, we must only allow billionaire oligarchs to present news. There is no way they would ever push news they want you to see....
Having differing sides publish news is good. Eliminating either is bad.

Re: CBC needed with Elon Musk ‘meddling’ in Canadian politics: heritage minister
I'm not sure how anyone is proposing that 'independently funded' media will somehow have more accuracy or less bias than media that isn't beholden to shareholders. We clearly see this with twitter, where the bias is all too real. While some may support these changes because they currently buy into misinformation being spread on that platform, they would be shocked and dismayed if somehow that same platform were to be bought by a left-wing nutjob using it to push extreme narratives that opposed their views.
Meanwhile, the people calling for the CBC's defunding are getting their news from sources that would directly benefit from the removal of any competing news outlet. In Canada the majority of 'private news outlets' are all just masquerading as different entities when they are mostly owned by PostMedia, which is owned by capital firms. Why would capital firms who are solely interested in extracting profit care about truth when rhetoric and misleading bs sell more views? No valid argument exists to support this point. Meanwhile vague fears about the 'liberal bias' at the CBC continue. Canada has been exploited time and time again by these monopolies and their promises of 'doing better' when they get caught. Remember the bread scandal? I had a reader here tell me that this was just bringing up the distant past. Now we find out that Loblaws has been short-changing people on the cost of meat! Remember the SNC Lavalin affair? One company, too big to fail, couldn't be held accountable. Remember the Rogers-Shaw merger? They raised prices within a month of closing that deal after saying they wouldn't. Remember all the money the government gave Telus to build more rural internet, and then they said it was too expensive to follow through on our side of the promise? Remember how Telus was Alberta Government Telephones (AGT) before it was sold, along with all the infrastructure that Albertans paid for? There are countless examples of how 'private industry' has won the rhetoric war at the expense of the public, and yet people seem eager to believe that this time, it will be different.

Elon Musk is as deranged as Trump. They both have their own personal agendas for control and power. Controlling media is one of the power-hungery's favourite tools.

Problem is all news is biased these days. There is no journalistic integrity all outlets put their spin on the news now. Read everything and you might be able to discern the truth.

All of you commenting on defunding the CBC have been sucked in by the billionaires. They have got you doing their dirty work for them. CBC existed when Stephen Harper was in power.
