The article doesn't mention anything about insurance.
Did the family not have any? It seems to me that if they were properly insured they would have some financial recourse.
Not to sound critical, but if they didn't have house insurance for the house and the possessions, why didn't they?

The annual insurance premium for an old home with wood stove heat, in the country, not near fire protection, would be really high.
