So says the same dopes that keep jacking up tax after tax after tax on the lumber industry, distribution, retailers, tradesmen, and potential homebuyers.
I guess it's chic to empty my wallet with taxes and then blame someone in a foreign country for our woes.

Let’s not forget the NDP forest practices code that make every step of the way increasingly difficult . How many volumes are now in use that ensure every step is hampered . Of course we aren’t even considering the blockades and court proceedings . This is why we are where we are at today.Gone_Fishin wrote: ↑Feb 14th, 2025, 12:23 pm So says the same dopes that keep jacking up tax after tax after tax on the lumber industry, distribution, retailers, tradesmen, and potential homebuyers.

I hope costs to Canadian consumers will not be going up because of the tariffs given the fact wood processed and consumed in BC does not cross the border and subject to a tariff. If it does then all it amounts to is a cash grab. There should be 2 prices for lumber. 1. A Canadian price. 2. A Canadian prices subject to tariffs at time of export.

I would hope that the lumber prices will double for the country that imposes these high tariffs. Lumber in Canada should remain tariff free for Canadians.

I sure hope retailers don't jack the price of lumber up in Canada.
What concerns me is BC has always sold the US certain grades of surplus fir logs. If those are exempt from tariffs of 55+ %, then the tap should be turned off.
The US sawmill capacity is not enough to rebuild LA and the sawmills of the west coast of the US do not have enough logs to sustain steady production.

Why would lumber prices increase here , we have our own forests and mills . The only reason prices would increase is more taxes from the insatiable government/s

Tariffs are paid by the importer (the US company importing the lumber) not the exporter.mgoddard8227 wrote: ↑Feb 14th, 2025, 1:11 pm I hope costs to Canadian consumers will not be going up because of the tariffs given the fact wood processed and consumed in BC does not cross the border and subject to a tariff. Some products that are produced in Canada by American companies were exempt from Tariffs.
Keep in mind that Trump re-wrote the NAFTA to USMCA and has now scrapped the deal he originally wrote !
The question is: What will the manufacturers of the products do to maintain shareholder value.
Slumping sales to the US means increasing the price at home? ... i dunno...

Sorry WinkyDink but Tariffs are not just a one way thing. You seem to be unaware of export Tariffs. I am not talking about reciprocal Tariffs, I am talking about Canadian Export Tariffs. What Trump is proposing is creating a new Govt Department called the "External Revenue Service" in which he proposes to use as the "wealth" collector of all income coming in from foreign sources of which these proposed "tariffs" are collected and collated to form a new US Sovereign Wealth Fund.WinkDinkerson wrote: ↑Feb 14th, 2025, 1:52 pm

Given this information, my strategy if I were the Govt would be a repeat of the Softwood lumber duty dispute with BC.
Rather than pay a 25% duty for Trumps wealth Fund......we institute a 25% export dutypays the Duty to Canada instead of the USA Wealth Fund. If we want to keep Trump honest, this is what we have to do with every Duty he imposes........we change it to an export Duty so the Price Argument Trump has is satisfied that protects the US Industry but we collect and keep that premium in Canada.
When we Export Tariffed the USA on softwood lumber cpl decades ago........they came back to the table and a far better deal was made and the Tariff revenues stayed in Canada.

Raw logs are exported because that is what the customer wants. They cut the log to their standards in their country and they want the waste produced to be used for other products in their country. They use the sawdust and waste wood.
