Because distracted driving is one of the highest causes of accidents in B.C., the RCMP in West Kelowna recently conducted a blitz targeting motorists who were distracted as they drove. No question distracted driving is very dangerous both for the driver and passengers in the vehicle but to other road users. Sadly, there are more and more indications of things which can cause drivers to be distracted, and therefore the cause of accidents.

Alongside our major highways, there are more and more signs being placed on the rights of way, all designed to attract passing drivers. Many of these signs are huge billboards, some having illuminated signs which change their adverts regularly. Even a quick glance at these signs can cause the driver to be distracted - and another accident occurs.

Most signs along these major roads are put up by private individuals and companies without permission from the Ministry of Transportation governs the use of our highways. Given the potential for these signs being the cause of accidents, isn't it time that local authorities be empowered by the Ministry to act on its behalf and remove the signs.

Of course, and particularly as folk approaching one of the most beautiful views in the Central Okanagan, the downhill approach on Highway 97 from the Westbank First Nation offices, the property is within the Nation's land, and as such are outside the jurisdiction of the Provincial Ministry. Perhaps now is the time for individuals to boycott the companies who are advertised on those signs, all of which are leased by a Vancouver based business, who leases the property from Westbank First Nation.
