Re: FortisBC says gas line strikes have hit a 20 year low in B.C.
Calling BC 1-Call is a total joke. We live in a 30 year old small strata complex and in the 90's we called before digging for some new fence posts. Telus and BC Hydro had no issues but BC gas at the time, sent out the original drawing submitted during development of the gas line. It included a long list of liabilities as the location of the shown line could be anywhere and no idea how deep it would be. Dig at your own risk. As the pencil line was where we planned to dig, we convinced them to come out and within 5 minutes the tech was able to clearly mark the line with paint. Way off the plan they submitted to us..
Several years later we had to dig up a section of the driveway for paving repairs. We knew there were underground utilities. BC Hydra had no issues. Shaw came out immediately and marked their lines. Telus said they could care less, dig and hope for the best and call us if your break the lines. I got hold of Darren Entwistile, CEO of Telus and eventually they sent a tech out to mark their lines. Fortis sent the same map as before. You would think once they had previously marked the line on our paving, a quick alteration should have been made on the map for future correct reference. No, just the same map and all the liabilities should we dig and hit their line. What a joke. Totally irresponsible management decisions.
The latest call about three years ago got the same useless information from now Fortis gas. Here's the 30 year old map, you are totally liable as the information is not reliable etc. etc.
Call BC 1-call it a total waste of time especially from Fortis gas. The gas company obviously lays the line or has someone do it but there is no oversight to know where it actually is or how deep it is. Good luck.... all the liability rests with the property owner.
For that service we recently had a 17% price increase.
