I think people will want to know there will be consequences.

The amazing part is that her parents had no idea she snuck a python into the house. They couldn't have known, right? But now they do and now what with them? The moral of the story is you have NO IDEA what your kids are doing these days.

I would hope the store owner would follow up on his idea.

Restorative Justice can work wonders with youth . I hope they can work out some sort of volunteer work arrangement with the store .

Congratulations to the Pet Store owner and the RCMP for their compassionate efforts to help the youths involved. That was a very important, and creative way to deal with a difficult situation, that offered an opportunity to teach a good lesson, and provided the opportunity to young people to consider the consequences of choices. These youths will be grateful to you for offering them a chance to do the right thing. Good for you adults for being creative and showing compassion. You are a great example of kindness in a difficult world. These young people will benefit greatly from this experience all of you afforded them. What a great example you were. Thank you for that!

There was a radio show about this theft and all the callers I heard said no to charges but yes to community service ie pet store or other animal shelter. I hope this happens to educate the teens on responsibility and empathy.

impo best way to handle this situation, there are worse thieves in the central Okanagan that should get jail time.

A guy walked in a Vernon store yesterday with a backpack so they asked him to get out. He refused, so 4 employees tackled the guy and dragged his butt outside. He was punching and kicking the entire time. At one point they all crashed into a shelving unit. It was pretty awesome, though I just about got flattened. I will be frequenting that store in the future because that's how you handle security. No need to get the police involved. just pound the guy's head into the pavement outside.
Now, if it's a girl, you certainly don't want to be that rough. Best to work outside the legal system because no one gets in trouble with the law. If someone is caught and shows remorse, ask her to volunteer some time at the store, and all is forgiven.

Not just these days. My cousins and I snuck many many animals home in our youth. Rabbits, chickens, snakes, lizards, frogs, turtles.
Kudos to the store owner for how he handled it. Make the kids take responsibility without saddling them with legal recourses.
