Re: Nova Scotia & Coffee Canuck?
Quaint is a word I use often to describe the wonderful towns throughout the Province. It's funny, but I feel as if this is exactly where I am meant to be and why the heck did it take me so long to get here! I have this true sense of 'home', and that is something I never experienced in Kelowna, in all the years I lived there. My dad asked me the other day if I missed BC, and without hesitation I said..."no way, this is my home and I consider myself to be a proud Nova Scotian." Others may still view me as an outsider (dont know), but that is how strongly I feel about this place.
Do you remember the brilliant fall colours? The incredibly deep crimson reds, golds, tangerines? How about the pesky but cute Blue jays?
I visited Nova Scotia twice before moving here. The first time was for a week last April and we went to the Annapolis Valley where I thought I might want to live. Then I came back again in May to the area I'm in now and made the decision this is where I want to be. I went home and put my home up for sale within a week and it sold in two days, and we were out here permanently the next month, June.
You really do need to come back and visit. I keep telling people though. Be prepared to want to stay!
I'm going to take some pics of the small icebergs in the ocean tomorrow and will definitely post them.
I am only here because all my family eneded up here, I would move out of Kelowna in a minute. Having only lived in NS as a kid, I'm not sure how I would like it as an adult, but my bet says I would love it. I sure do remember the fall colors, absolutely breath taking!
We moved from our small NS town to Surrey if you can imagine that. It was a culture shock, and I still may not be over it some 35 years later lol
Can't wait to see those pics!! You blue noser you!!!

Hey Coffee Canuck,
Well our house finally sold here in Kelowna.
My family and I are packing up and moving to Nova Scotia at the end of April. Do you have any advice for us in the moving process etc....

1- Buy a map.
2- Stop at the dollar store, might not be one where you're going.
Those are the basics.
What part of Nova Scotia are you moving to? Why are you moving? Did you buy a place out there??
"Let there be smoke." And there was smoke. And it was gooooooood.

Oh wow, another exile...love it! My advice for moving is to either get a great rate on a u-haul and drive across Canada or sell most of your stuff and buy it here. Mind you, April is not yet considered high time for movers (I don't think) unlike when I moved at the end of June, so it might be cheaper.
What made you make the wonderful move?
Do you know what area you are moving to yet?
Have you visited here yet, or are you doing a 'cold' move?
I think this is great and I know you will just love it. We had a terrible wintre storm yesterday, however it was one day and now it's gorgeous out.

I have 10 acres in the County of Colchester (Truro) that was left to my brother and myself. I cannot believe how low the tax assessments and taxes are on 2 x 5 acre parcels. My brother was working down there a few years ago for about 5 months but never made the trip out to look at our property. The fool. He said he made so many friends while there that he just didn't find the time.

Truro is the next county over from where I am in Pictou county, about a 30 min drive. It's a tad bigger, but much more busier with more jobs. I find it more confusing to get around, but maybe thats because I'm used to where I'm at..lol We'll often go down for the afternoon as they have this really cool store downtown that sells everything and they have a bargain basement with lots of great deals.
Yeah, land out here is a steal compared to most of BC. My brother is actually interested in investing in some ocean front property here and has told me to keep my eye out. When we took the dogs down to the beach a few days ago we saw a big sign that said 'lots for sale', and they have a beautiful close view of the ocean. I put a call into my realtor asking about them. He left me a voicemail and said if they are the ones he's thinking of, they are 2 acre lots for $18,000. I had to clear my ears out and I'm sure I heard him wrong..lol...so I just put in another call to verify the price. Heck, if thats all they are, I just may buy one!
*Note to self, stop raving about Nova Scotia, otherwise EVERYONE will be moving here, and before I know it, it will be as busy and congested as Kelowna...ugh!!

Re: Nova Scotia & Coffee Canuck?
Hi Coffee Canuck,
No, we have never been there before, but we are going out next weekend for job interviews (yeah). I lived on the west coast for about 10 years, and in Kelowna for 10 years and the rest in Manitoba. I have always been drawn to the Maritimes, and now with the housing prices going up and up (even in the prairies) we thought it would be an adventure and a smart finanical move.
We aren't sure exactly where we are moving yet but most likely around the Stewiackie area (beautiful acreages). My husband's job will most likely be dictating where we purchase our house. Once that is established then I will start my electrician apprenticeship.
BriTer- I don't need a map... I drive by feel
(just kidding)

Nope, Quebec.
Me too! Born there and lived in Point Claire for the first 5 yrs of my life until my dad took a job posting in California.
DivaDorothy, make sure you pack a warm coat, it's still chilly here this time of year and with the wind coming off the ocean, it can be quite chilly.

Edit to ad... I am going to assume that you are renting a car while here. I will warn you that one of the negatives of NS is the potholes. In fact, some cyclist organization has refused to come here because they are so bad. This year has been worse than ever though because of the constant freezing and thawing. The main hwy's are good, it's a lot of the town roads you have to watch out for. It's funny, because when driving at night and seeing a driver weaving on the road, I don't think, there is a drunk driver. Noooooo, I think, POTHOLE ahead!

I just thought of something that might be of interest. Here is a link to the Hwy web cams throughout the Province. One thing you wont ever see is congested Hwy's. It amazed me how little traffic is on them, but then this is not a populated Province.

Here are a few pics from around my home in New Glasgow
Blue jay on my front porch. Pesky lil birds, but they are so pretty and I love em.
Pictou Causeway. These birds come every spring to build their nests on these pylons. It's an amazing site to see.

My snowy home. This is very much a typical Nova Scotian home.
New Glasgow city hall. This is a wonderful old heritage building.
The ocean and beach 15 min from me called 'The Merb'.
