Kelowna Skyline

Post by loraksus »

Hopefully this post won't be as depressing as most of the threads here... I'm lurking and I see everything from dogs killed by coyotes to stupidly high prices of homes and all sorts of other negative stuff. Meh...

Anyways... I took a series of pics early this morning and stitched them together with a great (and free) program called autostitch (google it - some folks at UBC made it)

It's really big - about 5mb, 23,625 × 1,963 resolution - so if you're on dialup, be prepared to wait.

I'm pretty happy with it, but would like a higher res copy - but I'd need a better tripod (this one sort of lost vertical alignment as I panned) and a clearer night first. Maybe take it during twilight?

A smaller version can be found here

Does anyone have anything similar from years ago? I think it would neat to see the changes over the years.

Also, another picture from a few days ago - it turned out better than I expected (I have a crappy tripod that shook in the wind) so I decided to come back with a toque a few days later and do the whole city.

Good job. I really enjoyed the last one showing the lift section of the bridge. That will be a historical picture soon. :130:

Thanks for all the positive feedback.

Canon EOS DIGITAL REBEL XTi w/ a fairly mediocre 75-300mm lens I got for $100 off ebay.
Focal Length: 80.0mm
Exposure Time: 30.000 s
Aperture: f/11.0
ISO equiv: 100

That will be more or less the settings (autostitch probably tweaked levels a bit across the image.)
I'd like to re-shoot it at higher resolution, but I need a much better tripod (thinking I might build one myself) and a bit more time to do it (since instead of 11 source images, it would be ~40 or so.
That lens seems to be a bit sharper at around f/8, and I'd like to lighten it up a bit as well (seems a bit too dark on some displays - I much prefer the color, etc, of the third pic in my post. Was hoping to get that, but it didn't work out.

$100.... $100?????? Do you realise how much...wait, 'course you do otherwise you wouldn't have bought it. Darn, what a deal!
A great buy, beautiful results with the cam. 30 s exposure time, wow!
I hope you'll be posting more of your pics here.

I liked it enough to thieve the image, to make as a sig (Although intentionally small) If that is O.K. with you loraksus.

Well, $100 for the lens alone ;) Camera was a bit more ;)
People crap on that particular lens (it's the non-IS version), but for the price, it's pretty decent and has some nice reach (~120-480mm equiv if you factor in the 1.6x dslr crop)
I took this pic (of the moon) w/ it, although I had to mess with the defringing features during the raw import. Would like clearer, but I think I need to move up for a clearer pic.

Very impressive!!!

Have you tried weighting your tripod? You could suspend something between the legs (like a water bottle or a boulder on a heavy string). That would help stop the movement by quite a bit.

Very nice panoramic shot. Even with a high speed connection that first image took a while to load, but it was worth it. :smt023

I tried, but it's not the tripod moving, but the head / camera body. Pretty sure I need a better tripod ;) It's not moving much, but enough to muddy it up a bit.
