Re: Trucks, Bumpers and Trailer Hitches
I can't believe that so many of you lost the point.
READ CAREFULLY... It is not about "fault" or being able to laugh about the damage that you have caused to someone else, it is about the COST to ALL of us.
Shouldn't there be some standards or requirements regarding bumper-to-bumper impact. Why the hell should we even have bumpers if not to be able to "bump" into something. Bumping a trailer hitch which is 30 cm higher than a bumper can cause lots of damage, is dangerous and is making insurance higher for all of us.
Trailer hitches and higher than normal bumpers are costing us MILLIONS of dollars in extra vehicle damage and increase insurance rates. Equally important is the safety hazard of crashing into the back of a truck and sliding under it's bumper.
ICBC should be livid and should encourage prosecuting offenders
I know it must be nice to be able to gloat about the "lack" of damage that you have after being rear ended, but get over it. Take the damn thing OFF if it is not being used. Next time you are filling up with gas, slip around to the back of the truck for 30 seconds and remove the damn weapon.
Then again, why should you care? When you are spending $150.00 per fill-up, you probably don't care about insurance costs either.

Of course being considerate also means keeping your eye on your driving skills and the vehicles around you. I leave my hitch in because I'm not going to take 30 seconds out of my time to please someone who doesn't know how to judge distances or drive. If that extra 8 inches of hitch messes with someone's driving skills, then they need to brush up on the rules about following too close or learning to use their eyes.
Also to note, between the boat, the bike trailer and the firewood equipment, I use my hitch regularly enough that I'm not going to cater to someone who shouldn't be driving.

You seem to wrap alot of issues into one little statement.
There are standards in place and well written into our Motor Vehicle act, you my little friend are persicuting the innocent truck operator. The law is well written that your vehicle can carry a load or attach a towing device the exceeds past the bumper of the vehicle. If you don't like it it you should quit bellyaching and get busy gathering support and have an ammendment made to the current law. Of course you are probably too too busy (lazy) and would like someone else to do it for you like ICBC.( I wouldn't know if you are, I'm only assuming this as that is the system of attack you are using)
Now with your last statement that you yourself are trying to derail this thread on. Fuel is very expensive, and that $100- $150 per fill up is *bleep* some of us off abit. Maybe even making us distracted while driving figuring out where we can cut corners to pay our fuel bill. Should I not feed the kid one or two days a month?...or maybe cut off my weekly church donation? Something has to give. So please stay off my rearend as I might just snap and catch you a little to close and push my brake pedal a little faster than you may be anticipating. After all, I am a little lazy and selfish. *bleep* you off might just be the thing that makes my day.
Truthfully your point has merit, but your approach will only serve as a forum to rant. You need to get off your lazy butt and take appropriate action. GO GET THE LAW AMMENDED
