Where is a good Indian restaurant in Kelowna and what dishes do you recommend at this location?

We've heard Dawett on Ellis is good. Here is a blog that reviews three restaurants.

IMHO - blechh.. but must admit I am spoiled by eating "real Indian food" homemade by my East Indian/Malasian in-laws. Dawatt can't compare... unfortunarely they are restricted by our North America palates.. Go to India, Malaysia, Singapore and see the differnce. A far cry is Dawatt, and their staff practices are a far cry as well...

Yes I'll take reservations lol

I have never eaten at an Indian restaurant here in Kelowna yet but I love Indian food!... I make my own curries favouring madras... usually using chicken... plenty of fruit, raisins, apples etc and some cream in there with a hint of ginger to amp up the flavour just that bit more...on a bed of saffron rice with a poppadum too... I was actually addicted to Chicken Tikka Massala at one time lol

Last time I ate Indian food other than my own was at the Sikh Temple in Rutland...beautiful

A few of the people that have mentioned the Dawatt restaurant to us are East Indian and the've told us that it was good.
If you can't afford to go to India, Malaysia, Singapore for a comparison try it. The only way you'll know for sure.

If you're ever in the southern end of the valley there's a humble little place in Oliver called the "Best of India". It's nothing fancy, a ma/pa operation with checkered plastic tablecloths over mismatched wooden tables, but the food is great. And it just happens to be right across the street from the Oliver Theatre, which is a trip back in time in itself.

If you ever feel like going for Indian food at Navratan in Penticton, it would be best to lie down until the feeling goes away.

I have only been out once for Indian food in Kelowna and that was to Chutneys in the Mission. I remember the food being great and I know my parents go there a lot and really enjoy it. I mentioned to my husband that we should go back and he seems to remember that the service was poor because they were grumpy. I don't know!......not at all what I remember but I guess that's why we're married! :dyinglaughing:

Chutneys/Dawett are all owned by the same owner. I love Indian food and find both pretty decent. I love Butter Chicken and Tikka Masala. Sharwood brand jarred sauce from the grocery store is excellent (considering it comes in a jar). Make your own basmati rice and extra foods has delicious naan. I brush that with a little olive oil and sprinkle with some fresh basil = delicious.

I'm surprised flamingfingers. While an East Indian co-worker of mine prefers his Mom's curries, Dawett is "real" enough for his family when they go out for dinner. Of course it's not going to be the same as in India, but for those of us stuck in K-town for the moment (still quite a white bread little town) I think Dawett or Chutney would be quite enjoyable for most people.

Edited to add:

Snoozin', The last time my girlfriend and I went to Chutney in the mission We got fantastic service and the food was very tasty.

Snoozin, I just read the second part of your question about what meals to order.....

When my husband and I went to Chutneys I remember that we had a wonderful "sampler" dinner which, I believe we shared.....This was great because we got to try so many different items.

As I said, I don't remember the service being poor and now that I think about it....it was when we had a newborn baby at home so it was probably me that was grumpy, not the service.

I wouldn't hesitate going back to Chutneys. As a matter of fact, I'm going to tell the hubby to take me there this week! enjoy!
