When I used to volunteer at the food bank,I noticed that very little high quality protein was allotted for families and individuals. Lots of rice, potatoes, pasta, bread, etc. Fresh veggies and fruit were also supplied and most protein came in the form of canned beans and tuna.
As we've become better educated and choosier about what we put in our bodies, the grocery bill has really risen. Many people have no choice but to stretch the food dollar to the point that they are eating less than healthfully.
At my job,I have the task of assisting folks living with Type 2 diabetes and on a very limited budget, try to get as much nutritional value from every penny as they possibly can. This is becoming increasingly difficult because of cost of good, clean, healthy food.I do worry about this and am always looking for ways to educate myself and my clients on attaining and maintaining a healthy lifestyle. It's refreshing to note that both the Canadian and American Diabetes Assc. are changing their retoric about those with diabetes using so many processed, baked and sugary foods :200:

Well, considering after I have paid the rent and the utilities I have about $300 left, the dawg and I live on that - and he eats better than I do. That also includes any fun, paper products like Kleenex, TP and paper towels, female "essentials", holiday and birthday presents, and FUEL. I don't buy organic because I can't afford it. I try to eat healthy and try to have meat or fish at least once a week, and drink a lot of milk. Once in a while I will "treat" myself to McDonald's or Dairy Queen, but that's usually when I have worked a stat and have a bit more coming in. I eat a lot of soup :(

This is a big issue with me too! We are finding that choosing fresh and lower fat products, along with the leaner cuts of meat are really driving the grocery bills up! We do get a little relief because the junk foods and prepared foods are high priced too and we don't buy them anymore. But, it is still a challenge every week! :clueless:
