Deaf Dog
I put an ad in CASTANET a while ago for a deaf dog that needs a home and wanted to spread the word...anyone who is interested?? The ad isn't approved yet so it won't be there yet..for few hours. It's under pets/dogs. A pic is included. She has blue eyes.
Long story but to make it short..we placed her in a home on a farm and the dog didn't get along with their dogs...so they put her in the SPCA and we found out this today..and she was due to be put down at 4pm today. My husband couldn't allow this to happen since she's a great dog. The SPCA said the reason they were putting her down is because no one wants a deaf dog that is hyper. I'm a professional ASL instructor...so I will be willing to teach the lucky future owners signing to communicate with the dog and work with the owners; we already have a deaf dog of our own for 13 years now so I have experience. I believe I have a book here somewhere about training a deaf dog which I can give to the lucky owners. If I didn't have any animals..I would take her in a heartbeat..she has a great personality. She rather be an "only child".
Any questions..feel free to PM me about it or just post it here.
Thanks!!!

Rds, How sad! I am so sorry to hear that. What type of dog? I have two hyper brats already, so I don't need another, however I will keep my eyes and ears open and pass the info on!

Re: Deaf Dog
Here's the link on the SPCA website...
http://www.spca.bc.ca/media/Deaf_border ... _Press.asp
We were told that with her deafness...she's unwanted.
Also here's info about how common deaf dogs are put down. http://en.allexperts.com/q/Ask-Veterina ... *bleep*-dog.htm
\
Deaf dogs are always put down..it's very common. Because many people don't want to deal with a dog that is deaf..too much work in their opinion. So they consider them as un-adoptable at majority of SPCA. About 4 months ago; the Kelowna SPCA put down a deaf bulldog down because no one didn't want a deaf one. You can call to dbl check if it's true...it's very common knowledge for people like me who own a deaf dog. Deafness isn't deadly..but a trait in a dog that makes it nearly impossible to adopt them out.
My dog is deaf since birth and knows 90 signs. She's very bright and very good dog. Her deafness was never in the way; she used to be in flyball for couple years and did aligity. It never was a barrier for her; her deafness. I got her from a no-kill shelter down the coast 13 years ago when she was rescued from the SPCA down there by a person who put her in a no-kill one after being told they will put her down next day.
If there's no interest in this dog; I plan to find her a no-kill shelter and hopefully she will find a home soon; her chances there are better than at the SPCA.

Re: Deaf Dog
I would presume Kelowna and Vernon would be similar and Kelowna may have reached a zero-euthanasia goal but not all have. I feel for anyone trying to find a home for a handicapped pet as so many are drawn to cute little puppies and forget that there are older animals just as needy and willing to enhance someone's life. Good luck. The BC SPCA's goal is to find a good home for every adoptable animal in our care while at the same time reducing the numbers of surplus animals. Our euthanasia rates are among the lowest in Canada and we are committed to reaching zero-euthanasia for adoptable animals.
Truths can be backed up by facts - do you have any?

That's my point...deaf dogs are not easily adopted out...it's a fact which is sad but true.Fancy wrote:I would presume Kelowna and Vernon would be similar and Kelowna may have reached a zero-euthanasia goal but not all have. Re: Deaf Dog
The website mentions nothing about Whistler being put down today. I called the Vernon SPCA and they aren't open today. I still think it is against their policy...I do not believe that they will euthanize Whistler because of deafness alone.
The reason I want some proof of the OP is because I am concerned that someone is going to adopt this dog so it won't be put down instead of because they really want it...for the wrong reasons. This dog needs special care and a special owner. She is only 1 and a half, she already knows some signals and it is going to take a bit of time to find the right person that will want to adopt her.
I will phone them again tomorrow morning and check into this.
I may be wrong about Vernon's policy but I have seen no proof that I am wrong.

Re: Deaf Dog
We found a home for the dog; the lady wanted the dog but the man didn't want the dog because she's deaf and "too much work"; he said. Enuff said.... still looking for a home for her.

The website on Whistler is old...they have not updated it yet. She's not in there (SPCA) anymore as you can obviously "see".onestop67 wrote:The website mentions nothing about Whistler being put down today. I called the Vernon SPCA and they aren't open today. Re: Deaf Dog
You are contradicting yourself. Your first post says you found out today she was at the SPCA...now she's not. You found a place but the guy said no...and so on. Now you say the website is old but it is dated 2 days ago.Rds wrote:Be my guest and check this out.
You wonder why I'm confused???
If you can't explain it better, yeah, I'll call the SPCA tomorrow and go from there. I want to know what's REALLY happening with the dog. If you could maybe try to explain it again, it would be appreciated.
So, where is she right now? With you? With the couple where the husband doesn't want her? Help!!!
If she is out of the SPCA then I won't concern myself with getting her to a nice home.

Ok let me spell it out for you...
Number one...we found out she's at the SPCA this morning
Number two....we took her out of the SPCA today because she was due to be put down at 4 today
Number three...the website is "old" because they never updated it that she is not there anymore
Number four....she is currently with us until around 3:30pm today and we took her over to a lady's place who was interested in the dog
Number five....we found a home for her and told to come back at 4 to see if her husband who arrives home from work agrees to keep the dog...our neighbour lady wanted her but her husband does not due to her deafness
Number six...we asked the neighbour lady if she can hold on to the dog until we find her a permenant forever home since we can't keep her at OUR place due to her not getting along with our dogs
Number seven to...you can just add 2 and 2 thru the Vernon SPCA yourself. Cheers!
In all; still looking for a home for her. We CAN not keep her since we already have our 2 dogs.

Re: Deaf Dog
I want what's best for the dog as well.
*Rolls eyes??? Because you were very confusing about what is happening...yeah okay :clueless:
You're trying to find her a home, right? So why was explaining the situation such a chore???
ETA, thanks, now I don't have to worry about driving to Vernon on Saturday.

Ummm Rds, I was also confused by what exactly was happening. :( (I too thought that the beautifull pup was @ the SPCA)
Now that all is clear, and pup has a "home" for the moment, maybe we can all focus on trying to find Whistler a new family!! :nyah:
~Will put it out there.
