A search for an injured dog is underway in Kelowna Tuesday afternoon.

Zoey Labby came down to Kelowna for a visit Tuesday with her dog Taos along for company.

Around 1:30 p.m., a horrible thing happened. Taos, a two-year-old chocolate lab, was hit twice by a vehicle in the parking lot of the Sears at Orchard Park Shopping Centre.

“She was hurt and her instinct was to run away and that’s what she did. She just ran away and I can’t find her,” says Labby.

She says after searching the area behind the mall for some time by herself, she called Power 104 to report her dog missing.

“About an hour ago, people just started showing up to help me search for her. Perfect strangers, maybe 20 or 30 now, they heard what happened and came to help me look for her.”

Taos is described as a chocolate lab with more red than brown in her coat. She wears a brown collar with diamonds and has a dog tag number of 319 246.

I was listening to this on the radio this afternoon...

The one thing the article neglects to mention is that the person who ran over the dog TWICE was on his/her cell phone at the time. I just don't get how people can believe they can safely operate a vehicle in any circumstances (other than parked) while talking on a cell phone.

I hope that the dog is found soon and gets the medical attention it likely needs. And my thanks to those who were able to go out and help look for him. :124:

The dog has been found ! On Sun FM they actually did mention that the person who hit the dog was talking on their cell phone. Pretty brutal, I'm sure the woman feels terrible, I sure would !

I'm so glad Taos was found and hope his injuries are not too severe.

What a great story about people that don't even know each other coming together to help out. Gives me a little faith in humankind to think that about 20-30 complete strangers just happened to hear this on the radio and show up to help look for the dog. I've always thought the people in Kelowna are friendly and helpful when so many others say the opposite....Way to go Kelowna! :thewave:

An amazing day in Kelowna
To the editor:
RE: Strangers help look for injured dog

This the story of a dog named Taos, the chocolate lab from Kamloops that was run over twice on Tuesday in Orchard Park Mall by a woman who may not have even know what she had done since she was on her cell phone.

Right at 2 p.m. when I started work I received a call from a lady named Debbie who was calling to see if we could help as a dog had bolted across Dilworth Drive towards the great Canadian Superstore and we said yes.

The announcement was made and the ball started rolling. The difference here was when I called the dog owner back, she was so inconsolable that her pain transferred right to me. After barely composing myself I called Mike at the Kelowna SPCA in tears, explained all the details and he called in all his resources. I then called for help from anyone that might be in the area to help Zoey, the dogs owner. I asked them to show up at the green space by Great Canadian Superstore and it was like a runaway train. Listeners started showing up in droves to help a young woman find her "baby".

The calls poured into the station with help coming from everywhere. It was incredible! I called Rachael at Castanet.net and she put the story up immediately, raising the vibration in the search. The search for Taos was mentioned at every opportunity and the searchers answered the call. Many people came with their dogs and the chocolate lab owners too!

Two hours later a call came in from Dawn, who close to tears, told us that the dog has been found in some bushes down the road from the store. Dawn too found it incredible, the outpouring of caring individuals with no thought for themselves other than to help a young woman they had never met.

I just wanted to thank Debbie who called in at the beginning, Mike from the SPCA who rounded up the troops, Rachael and the staff at Castanet.net (our community home page), Mike Bottomly and the many Power listeners who called to help this day. Thank you to Sean, head of Orchard Park Security who sent his guys over Ellen, Angie and Linda from the Dare to Dream bookstore who focused their psychic energies, left their jobs and took part in the search and Dawn a hard working woman who got off work from the Great Canadian Superstore and immediately started looking for Taos and who ultimately called with the good news that the dog had been found...alive.

Thank you for being you and helping uplift the world one person at a time. I think Zoey and her dog Taos will never forget their experience here in Kelowna.

Thank you again,

Liz McKinney - Power 104
