Anyone know what the Canadian laws are surrounding a Board changing a Membership Fee without advising it's members of such changes?..In particular, if Board back dates such a change but several Members already paid previous fee and were not advised of the change at that time?

As a member where you invited to the meeting that made the decision?

Did you go?

Was there a vote?

Did they meet quorum?

Can you review the bylaws?

There is nothing in the bylaws and members who paid the previous membership fee are being told they have to pay the remainder.

The Board refuses to allow members at Board meetings and the minutes of Board and general meetings haven't been made available to the membership for months although a motion was passed that these be provided to the membership.

There are a few of us combing through the Societies Act and a few are talking to lawyers...

Well then, you will get a professional answer from the lawyers.
But the societies act will determine the outcome, only if the board adheres to the act.

Murder is illegal. Happens all the time though.

Interesting...Apparently, if a Board is not operating within the boundaries of either the Societies Act and/or their Bylaws they can be taken to court by one or more members. A judge, where wrongdoing has been proven on the part of one or more board members, has the ability to remove an entire board, seek the return of society funds where a director/directors have received funds from or earned money as result of a transaction with the Society, and even assign financial penalties and/or jail time to board members despite any provisions in either the bylaws or the Societies Act or any additional directors insurance paid for by the society....good to know...
