Sometimes one just has to vent - about a local magazine.

This thread probably won’t get to far, yet out of frustration I need to post it. One has to really wonder about these “BEST OF AWARDS”. I mean come on, how gullible do these certain media (not Castanet) think we are. There is one glossy – look at how wonderful a publication we are – look at how wonderful a publisher I am – look at my wonderful magazine that just published the BEST OF in the Okanagan. What a joke!! My past experience tells me that these BEST OF is nothing more than a money grab by the publication. They know who they are going to list as BEST OF … then go out and sell them an ad. Easy pickings. The crazy part is in their latest edition of the BEST OF … I know of at least one business they have listed that hasn’t been in business for quite some time. Go figure. Just annoying that a publisher with an ego bigger than … well I can’t say … insults our intelligence. Suppose I’m just getting old and cranky and tired of BS. I also can’t handle said publisher having his picture taken with all those so called celebrities. Wish this magazine would get a life … the Okanagan is tired of it. Sorry can’t say name of magazine. Thanks for letting me vent. :130:

Agreed. The winners of this unsaid publication's honour, are coincidentally people who have purchased advertising.
I also know how the nominations are done. The publisher has pretty much already picked the winners, then calls around to find other names to add to the list to make it look legit.

Agreed. Just a PR move for/by advertisers. Not much different than the popularity contest run on social media by another local media outlet issuing their gold, silver and bronze winners of the "best of" categories. If you've got lots of FB and Instagram friends you're a shoe-in.

Absolutely agree i have often thought exactly the same and wondered only a select few are in each category when there are often many many more in the area. Same thing apples to the ridiculous awards that cover an entire page or three in the papers as the realtors get a pat on the back for being so damn good, in fact there are so many categories its like they had to make up some so that everyone gets a mention. Are Realtors the only group of business people who have to have their picture on every advert and business card? Do we really need to see what they look like?

We all appear to know the local magazine about life in and around the Okanagan. Funny thing is it has a "price" tag on it (or at least use to). Cannot believe someone would pay for this "rag" that is truly the worst of the bunch of local "lifestyle" magazines that are FREE at many locations including coffee shops, grocery store news racks and many waiting areas of local business's.

Everyone on here knows how the "best of" works in this magazine. This particular owner/publisher will bash all the other local magazines but it is his own that is the boring one. Best Of is a thing of the past and it appears everyone knows it EXCEPT this owner...…………...DINOSAUR!

The gold, silver, bronze best of publication is a big chamber member (as is this site), awards their own publication top honours across many categories, and then often awards businesses that their sister company has worked with in the recent past. They make no light of the fact they often do work for the subject of their articles (a mayoral candidate's campaign site comes to mind particularly when they started covering the municipal election - bias much?), and articles they don't write are copies of what can be found here on this site (they've been called out on it by Castanet in the recent past on Twitter), or ripped directly from Vancouver's Daily Hive, or the Canadian Newswire.

They also do terrible work on the whole, whether it's covering an event or developing websites. How they remain in business is really beyond me as is how they have managed to accumulate over 50k followers across their social media channels. Their owner also slobbers all over Instagram about how wealthy he is, making light of the fact that he now owns 4 different properties around Kelowna, drives a brand new expensive truck, and has taken up shop in one of the taller buildings in Kelowna. It's pretty gross.

We are a locally owned small business. And personally I think these awards are bogus. Every year we get approached. And it’s based on how many votes you can conjur up by advertising for them
We do not enter these awards, as to us, an award us just given by being elected by a panel of judges or something like that.

It seems the realtors can't even bother to list pictures of a house listing. One was $600k and no photos at all. So they show their personal photo as a distraction.

Dodger - good point about realtors. With regard to photos have you ever noticed that the photos of some realtors are like 5-10 maybe even 15 years younger than their actual age. They kinda remind me of that great Carol King song ... You're so vain ... Unbelievable. I met a realtor to look at some property we were planning on selling. Had his business card. When this guy showed up I literally had to ask him his name because the picture on his card was about 15 years old. I thought I was going to meet a young realtor . Not so. This older dude shows up. Female realtors do the same thing. Like what gives???
