Herbert W. Armstrong, cult or Christian

Post by emc group »

if this name sounds familiar you may have grown up in the 50s 60s or 70s as i did. this man was a very powerful person in his prime, had alot of followers, my parents being some of them. i was able to get out in mid 70s, .. his teachings have been with me forever, not good, trust me, just wondering if any one else suffered thru those times as well. interesting how what you learn at a young age stays with you forever. if you were involved with that " church" you will remember.

curious of your stories, i also have some.

I remember Herbert W. Armstrong and admonishments from my parents and church to stay away from that evil religion because ours was the only TRUTH!!! So, good little girl that I was, I did... :spinball:

Father and son. I think Garner was the son...not my religion, so I don't know for sure. (I'm too lazy to Google it!)

Wacko????? I didn't see anything that would make anyone think that. I know my dad use to talk about him in a postive way.

"The use of medicine and doctors was discouraged because members were expected to place their faith in God for healing.[108] Armstrong stated: "Here’s God’s instruction to YOU, today, if you are ill. If we are to live by every Word of God, we should obey this Scripture. God does not say call your family physician...He does not say, call the doctors and let them give medicines and drugs, and God will cause the medicines and drugs and dope to cure you.... Instead God says call GOD’S MINISTERS. And let them PRAY, anointing with oil (the type and symbol of the Holy Spirit). Then GOD PROMISES He will HEAL YOU!"[109] Various members suffered discomfort and even death due to reluctance to resort to medical help, yet Armstrong made use of doctors and medicine later in his life."

Assuming his wiki is correct, I would say this qualifies him as a wacko IMO.

Many beliefs and religions believe that two.

Ironically enough, I had an interesting conversation just today with the psychologist we contract to fly up to our office every three months to speak with and assess some of our more “interesting” clients. We were speaking about one of my clients (a pedophile) who I had referred for his opinion on risk: a client who believed he was no longer at risk to re-offend because he had turned his life over to God. His order of community supervision was coming to an end, but due to some changes in his life circumstance I have applied to Crown to extend his supervision under section 810.1 CCC (interested folk can look it up).

I had to share with the psychologist how the client had come into my office and said “What will it take for you people to accept God has control of my life?”, and how I so much wanted to reply by saying “I don’t know. Maybe you have Him send me something by fax?”

Anyways, the two of us (me and the psychologist that is) entered into a little bit of a discussion on our shared perspectives, and ultimately agreed that simply dismissing the concept of God was at least as ignorant and arrogant as presuming to understand the nature and purpose of God. Getting back to the father and son combo being discussed here - Wacko might be a strong word, but perhaps not a completely inaccurate one.

p.s. I always liked "wackadoodle"

Yes they do, and it leads to innocent people dying for no good reason. At least once a week I read about some christian wacko denying their child medical treatment in favor of prayer. The child usually ends up dead. Score another one for 'faith'.

P.s. It's 'too' not two. One is an adverb and the other is a number.

Wacko, CNN is reporting that a woman in the southern US poured accelerant onto her 6yo daughter to burn the devil out of her. Burns to 20% of her body.
