Re: Church and children
You title the thread "Church and Children" and then post this Jesus Camp video. Maybe you weren't very clear on your meaning then.
Also, religious nuttery is nothing new. You're not "exposing" anything. It genuinely looks like you're trying to lump all religious people, or at the very least Christians, in with this group.

Re: Church and children
Choice of words sets the tone, which in turn often sets the mood and direction of a discussion - rightly or wrongly. Couple this with the fact that a certain poster famous for her disdain of religion has posted this video four times since the Spring, it is understandable that your post has been taken as an 'availability heuristic'.
As for the video, there are several things that make me shudder while watching it. The emotional "rah, rah" turns me off, but it is not really any different the the brainwashing emotional hype that my kids are subjected to in minor hockey.

Man, that Jesus Camp church is child abuse. Talk about terrifying children! Oh wait ... don't all religions do that in one form or another??? Hmmmmmmmmmmmmm

No, all churches do not do that. That video is not the norm. that video shows an extreme. It is like saying that a video of LA or Vancouver that shows gang violence indicates that is what happens in all cities. Then again, maybe you do believe that.

Re: Church and children
Well, actually what I meant was all religions scare children into following whatever their doctrine is.
It kinda goes like this:
"If you do XXX, you're gonna burn in hell."
"God won't love you if you XXX"
"To get to heaven when you die, you have to XXX."
"You better be good because God is watching you."
"The Devil will get you for that!"
Get my drift? Those are all statements to scare kids into doing what the religion wants.

Grammafreddy, when was the last time you heard those statements , in person, from a Christian leader ? The teachings of Christ in the new testament is about forgiveness and love. the only people he is hard on are the self righteous.
I very much agree that far too many " Christian leaders " fall into this category, one is too many.

And one is too many when parents do it, too. And lots of them use fear as a mental abuse weapon to make their kids "follow the word of their god". Of course, they don't call it "fear" or "abuse", but it is just the same.Soundsprofound wrote:Grammafreddy, when was the last time you heard those statements , in person, from a Christian leader ? Re: Church and children
Why is it that people now forget to make their own choices as an adult in favour of blaming anyone and anything else. I know some people whose parents were seriously whacked out, but once in adulthood were able to formulate their own thoughts and values independent from the way they were raised.

thats why I stated many a person ( sorry I forgot the r in the word person in my previous post but I'm sure most will let it slide
as most will agree were not perfect ) and didn't state all persons.
