Why did God make an earthquake in Japan?

I remember when I was going to church, the pastor made it seem like
everything happens for a reason. Like as if, we humans, can figure out
big events and explain them with simple answers.

For example, Haiti got the earthquake, because they do voodoo.
WW2 happened because God wanted some Israelis to go home.
Disasters happen because people have rejected God.

So why did the earthquake happen in Japan? Is it because Japan
has bad karma from killing all those Chinese in WW2? Is the radiation
hitting us, and USA because of our own karma, in Afhgnaistan and Iraq?

You know what? No one knows why things happen. they just happen - that's all.

Gee, I don't know. Have you figured out why god made you? Have you discovered his reasons for gracing us with your presence? Perhaps when you get the little things figured out, it will make the bigger picture more clear. Or maybe sometimes..........$hit happens.

Maybe he is reminding us that he is a jealous god and that he disapproves of Japanese people adhering to Shinto and Buddhism?

But, earthquakes always happen. The locations of large ones are extremely predictable - Vancouver may get a big one in the next few decades for example. How can anyone bring a god into this discussion? Crazy, etc.
