What are atheists?

Is there a god? What is the meaning of life?

Too funny...

Most people think I'm an ex cop...

Hippies don't do well here. Too much work to do just to get through the day.

Bucking and splitting Firewood, snowplowing, repairs, maintenance, trial clearing, dealing with guests all cut into a hippies ganja time...

Actually Nelson and the Slocan Valley are the hippy havens.

Smoke enough ganga and you get to talk to god, so very few of them are atheists. They just have no use for religion.

Well this is interesting? I thought atheists aren't religious????

(CNSNews.com) – Atheists and humanists serving in the U.S. military are leading an organized push for official recognition of their own chaplains, or something akin to chaplains. They contend that they are being left out, even though they say they outnumber participants in established religions.

I can just see it no:

Atheist chaplain encouraging the troops to make the best of this life, "Get the hell out of the army. If you stay, you will be killed and that does not make for the best possible scenario for living your life."

At least that would be my advice to them. Hell, if Christians want to die for god and country so they can have a better afterlife, all the power to them, but if you don't believe in an afterlife, get on with living, not dieing.

Man, we hear that a lot from all sides, but it doesn't seem to apply to the one saying it.

Lighten up pal, it's a joke.
When asked what he thought of Western civilization, Mahatma Ghandi replied "I think it would be a very good idea."

Really??

It's always funnier when someone else bears the brunt of another's lack of compassion?

Okay then...

Summing up...

It seems and/or appears that, atheists do not want to be seen as a religion but still realize that they require a clergy in order to espouse their lack of belief but don't want anyone to notice this.

They don't want to believe in god and seek to rationalize this belief by insisting that those who do believe in god are somehow misguided children, living in the past and in need of all-knowing atheistic revision.

They are unable to acknowledge the greater weight of history and documentation of god(s) and only adopt the science that fits their views when their views fit the science.

Are unable to realize that without god they would have no purpose or reason to be atheistic.

They choose to sit glumly, but safely(?) on fences (what if the fence was electrified; where would you go?) and watch the world roll by letting everyone else do the work, take the chances and make the sacrifices rather than make a decision and join into life and revel in all it's twists and turns, heartaches and joys given as gifts by god...

OOHHH; the drama...

People are least likely to vote for an Atheist and least trusted. Interesting article?

From the article....

Many religious people don’t like atheists, and in fact would apparently rate them alongside rapists on levels of trust, suggests a new Canadian study that claims to be one of the first psychological probes into anti-atheist prejudice.

Researchers at the University of British Columbia and the University of Oregon conducted a series of studies that found a deep level of distrust toward those who don’t believe in God, deeming them to be among the least trusted people in the world — despite their growing ranks to an estimated half billion globally.

I believe we need to ask "who" are atheists? Not "what".

And in redefining the question - Who are atheists? then I think you will find a new way of looking at this.

We (atheists) don't believe in a deity of any kind. Period. End of discussion. So any attempt to justify the "degree of atheism" is BS. An atheist is an atheist is an atheist! I know I am. There is NO persuading me otherwise. I do not believe, and I never will.

I don't need a "god" to tell me to respect humans. To know that child abuse is wrong. That abusing animals is wrong. That love is good as long as it is really love... and not some weird morphing of jealousy that then causes spousal abuse.

I have sufficient intelligence ( genetically and historically derived) to "get" it...without the hysteria of religion.

But how could you possibly have any morals without a god to threaten to fry your butt for eternity if you don't obey his rules? It is just not possible. After all, it is the only way god botherers can be made to behave.

You don't need the fear of god to act like a good person. If the fear of damnation is the only reason religious people act decently then they are pretty much terrible people.

That's about where I am with almost all the religious people - of any religion.
