I know a guy who believes in the rapture. I've read this is "new" doctrine from about the 1800's just made up by some guy. Is there any sound bible doctrine to support the rapture?

Well, I'm no expert (not even religious) but I think people who believe in the bible put more stock on ideas that are fully represented in the scripture rather than from an outside source.
