That's the one on Sutherland? Went there once. Not my vibe in terms of the service and the leadership but people seemed nice. They have nice gardens too. The building itself is beautiful.

thanks, still have not been ( afraid of being struck down by a thunderbolt, but a good way to connect to the Community
we used to go to a black Baptist church back home - wonderful people, great singing and the food afterwards was amazing. Everyone in their Sunday best, lots of guest singers from the US
SHILOH'S HISTORY

In the early 1900’s, the Canadian government advertised for settlers to purchase 160 acres for $10.00 or a quarter section of land and homestead in Alberta. Invited black settlers came by train from Texas, Oklahoma, Missouri, Illinois, Mississippi and other southern states between 1908 and 1914. For many of these settlers, coming to Alberta, Canada meant freedom from the laws of segregation in the United States.

At first it was clearly pointed out to the black settlers that they were not wanted in Canada. Still, even though it meant encountering prejudice and hardships, they came this far by faith.

Hey thanks for sharing that. I didn't know this piece of our history. It's amazing.

Well, I understand feeling uncomfortable going to church. I grew up in a fundamentalist Christian religion. It was a high control cult. So I mostly stayed away from religion when I got out of that. But recently have been interested in it again. You are welcome to tag along with me if you'd like that. I go to the catholic church on Sutherland usually 1pm Sundays with my wife. It's the traditional latin mass. It's quiet, calm and peaceful. I like that I can go there and keep to myself and just get a moment of peace and know there will be no expectation for me to do anything else.

As for getting struck by lightning, I literally have a tattoo of a burning church on my arm and I'm still standing. :P

thinking about attending a Church Service

Good topic. There's nothing wrong with attending a church service if you know the purpose of attending a church service. Unfortunately no one on God's green earth knows why they attend a church, especially the pastors.

So what is the purpose of attending a church service?

I wanted to find the answer. So I went to all kinds of churches all over the country and found out they're all the same. They are all kind of weak.

I step inside a church once or twice a year and I'm still standing, No lightning has struck me yet. And I survived an hour or two conversation with a priest last summer while on a cruise.
Always good to hear the other side's view of life.

I'm pro-christian and wouldn't want all the churches to close down like in Sweden or San Francisco.

I did my time. I spent two years - that's 104 consecutive Sunday mornings - wasted sitting on a wooden bench like a robot listening to a guy tell you some really good things, along with some lies.

After seeing your memes, I think you should certainly be attending church. :admin:

Good luck. I hope you are able to find a church that aligns with your own morals.
I'm sure there are great churches out there that don't defend the Christian bible, and aren't homophobic/transphobic.

My experience is that when I realize that someone I know is extremely judgmental or homophobic, that they are avid church goers and most usually Christian. The Christian part is most likely due to Christianity being the most common faith in the Okanagan which is where I live and know people. :)

Most likely stayed home and sat in front of the computer or snuggled the dog.

The last time I attended a Church Service (other than the odd funeral) was 30 years ago. I was brought up Presbyterian but decided to try the Alliance church. The preacher that day said he was "ex-Presbyterian" but that he had seen the light and come on over to the Alliance side of things. In his sermon, he essentially told the congregation that anyone NOT of the Alliance flock was going to H@ll. On the way out of the service, when we were shaking hands with the preacher, I told him that I was Presbyterian. The look on his face was priceless. I've never been back to ANY church since then. Every religion thinks that only THEY are right and the rest of the world is wrong. I don't believe that you have to go to church to be a christian; its more of how you treat the worlds people in general thats important.
