Excellent point as a demonstrationFancy wrote:Think it should have read (I'm having fun here)It is similar to these questions:
1. Would you like to go to town? yes or no.
2. If you are are made to go to town with your parents, what flavour of one ice cream cone would you like?
Vanilla?
Strawberry?
Licorice?
Heavenly Hash?
1. Do you want to change the Vanilla ice cream you eat to something different? Yes or no.
2. If you choose to change the flavour, which one would you like? Pick One.
Strawberry
Chocolate
Licorice
Heavenly Hash
that you don't get to have your vanilla ice cream
if more than 50% want another flavour.
Not one bit democratic.
I think we are getting somewhere here...
Thanks Fancy! :)
P.S. Thanks Jo.

O.K. canadman, I won't spoil your party by daring to disagree. :smt023canadman wrote:For those interested and out of respect for the moderators (though I've slammed them a bit in there as well) I've started a new thread just for election day rants... the carpet in this room is starting to look a little too ragged for me, I think we could all use a change of scenery. :) If Angusog comes knocking, just pretend we're not home.

You're going to like this then as it's been pointed out once or twice that neighbourhood names would stay the same no matter what. So with that in mind, you can always go to the neighbours for your vanilla ice cream :)Excellent point as a demonstration

OMG I live in West Kelowna...somebody shoot me..we wanted so much to not be a part of Kelowna and we name ourselves after that crap hole....I am soo embarrassed to live here now..what a shame....We couldn't be indiviual could we ? NO we just had to continue to be part of the city instead of being our own unique municipality...Disgusting if you ask me!

Re: Westside Naming Referendum
Only 166 vote difference. Can we hope for a recount? Man do people realize this is permanent. I can not believe that people would name our distict municipality after Kelowna just so they can say they won something and that is exactly what this is all about. The amalgamation people never got over their loss and as a result now have named out city this God awful name just so they can get even. I would have prefered just about anything else..to give a city a permanent name like this out of spike just goes to show the mentality of some people. Oh well stuck with it now. I hope they realize they have to live with it too!

Only one thing to say. We incorporate, then we want to call ourselves Kelowna ?
Pathetic. Simply pathetic.

No, it's not. In fact it hasn't happened. The new council needs to request of the provincial government that the letters patent be changed first.gouged wrote:Only 166 vote difference. Can we hope for a recount? Man do people realize this is permanent.
You cannot reason someone out of a position that they did not use reason to arrive at.

Isn't the name vote just an opinion poll? and then council still has the final say.

I wonder how long the change in name (if it goes ahead) will take?

Re: Westside Naming Referendum
I voted to incorporate and still agree that it was the right choice.
I always thought that the name Westbank was the way to go and there was no other choice I would consider BUT after alot of thought decided that West Kelowna is the right way to go.
You have Vancouver...West Vancouver...North Vancouver and all separate cities and all with there own identities.
So why not West Kelowna.Kelowna IS widely known as a holiday destination across Canada and further .Even though you do not agree with choices made there does not mean you can't piggy back on the success that they have acheived.

Re: Westside Naming Referendum
Actually, by the results, Council will be obliged to unanimously recommend a name change to the Minister and the Minister has promised to ensure the name on the Letters Patent is changed once a community consultation was held. Council conducted what was legally known as a non-binding plebiscite and called it a "community opinion vote".
Change is going to happen. It'll take months to go through the proper channels. Council will have to move a motion, likely in December 2008, to recommend to the Minister a name change. The Minister will let it sit on his desk until after Christmas and then bring it forth at a meeting of Treasury Board, which approves most Orders-in-Council, and then it will go to the full Lieutenant Governor-in-Council for final approval, I'm guessing sometime in February or March 2009. At some point in 2009, our name will be legally changed.
Cheers,
Doug
