Death threats doom Donkey debut
by John O'Connor - Story: 81457
Oct 5, 2012 / 5:29 pm
Film director Daryl Stoneage in a scene from Donkey Love.
The Okanagan Film Festival might be cancelled and the director says his life has been threatened over the plan to show a controversial film involving bestiality.
“I’ve had death threats over the last two days,” says Jeremy Heymen, director of the festival, which had scheduled a screening of “Donkey Love” on Oct. 13.
“I’m disappointed in the community…but there are people in the community that are willing to support this.”
The film documents what Heymen describes as a father-to-son tradition of bestiality in the South American country of Colombia.
Heymen maintains that the film, while suggestive, does not support bestiality but, instead, just tells the story of some “really disturbing” things.
“I’m not a supporter of anyone having sex with animals,” he added.
The festival was scheduled to run its movies at Paramount Theatre (Landmark) downtown Kelowna Oct. 11-14; however, Landmark says they were not aware of the content of the festival’s films until they read a story on Castanet.
Because “Donkey Love” and other films were not rated, Landmark, by policy, has cancelled showing the unrated films and will not host the festival.
"Nothing is a go, I've just had Landmark pull the plug," says Heymen. says of cancelling the festival.
Heymen has not officially cancelled the festival, but without a location to show the films it is doubtful the event will take place next week.
Heymen, a documentary filmmaker himself, says he is currently documenting the controversy over “Donkey Love.”

Did he think people were ok with this? Good on Landmark for pulling the plug.

Funny subject but it's pretty pathetic that someone organizing a film festival with a documentary even touching on a disturbing subject gets death threats.
Hopefully they track down the pieces of trash who threatened his life and stick em where they belong.... getting donkeyed loved by some 300 pound inmate! :dyinglaughing:

There was a interview with the director on CBC radio recently, as well as a review of the movie on AM1150 from Leo's video.
From what I gathered, some farmers in Columbia have sex with their donkeys because contraception devices are banned in their religious culture. Pregnancy means another mouth to feed, but men have needs. It is even taught from father to son in some cases.
The movie is not donkey porn. It is about a strange foreign cultural anomaly, and how it has ruined some peoples lives. Some men become addicted to this behavior.
I actually class bestiality in with rape and child molestation as animals cannot consent or understand what they are consenting too. However I wouldn't ban a movie based on its content if it presented it in a objective and non exploitative manner, as this clearly is. Documentaries touch on a variety of taboo topics.
Clearly the community has problems with anything other than paintings/photos/sculptures of sunsets, vineyards and retro fruit boxes. Death threats? Kelowna is going to make national news yet again, uhg.

This makes me very sad that people cannot handle the truth, that these things are out there. Let's just brush it under the rug and move on with our lives, right? Pathetic Kelowna, truly pathetic.
To be inspired.

Isn't this the theatre that allowed the Kelowna Anti Choice Society to screen their propaganda? Well, I would suggest boycotting them for their biased choices and prejudice, but that place is such a dive I never bother going there anyways. I tried to catch Cronenberg's last film there, and the movie stopped 3 times, and each time they reset it in a different place. We tried to get our money back, and the bong addled lackeys there claimed they didn't know how to do a refund. Not to mention the absolute filth... the floor was blanketed in weeks of unswept popcorn. Forget Landmark... Kelowna needs an independent Cinema already, a place you go to enjoy edgy alternative films. People used to go to the cinema to be challenged artistically and intellectually. Now they go to recreate their living room experience, gorging themselves on high calorie snacks while nestling in oversized lazy boy styled chairs; The volume goes up, while the quality goes down. I find this far more repulsive than a documentary about the bestiality practices of another culture.

First let me say that by no means do I approve of beastiality or zoophilia. However, whats happening in this case is pure sensorship.
Triple6 it makes no difference if they thought we would approve or not. Most citizens of Kelowna don't likely support chopping someone up with saws, or cutting out peoples organs and eating them but, these types of movies play here without ridiculous death threats.
Although we may find this disgusting, it is in fact a very real practice handed down by generations of Columbian men to their sons. They are taught to leave girls intact until marriage and to practice on donkeys. They are also taught that it helps them to develope better and that it will enhance their genitalia. Seems pretty odd to me but then North Americans have odd practices according to some countries.
As for the death threats. I really hope that they find the perpetrator and prosecute them to the full extent. I hate to point fingers but I'm pretty sure I can guess which demographic it came from......middle aged to elderly, religious male.

I'd rather live with regrets than regret not living.

If the thought of this movie upsets you or you think it's a hoax, I strongly recommend you do NOT watch *bleep* of the Carribean. (Warning: graphic and uses foul language.)
You cannot reason someone out of a position that they did not use reason to arrive at.

Hold the "Mayo".A Zimbabwe man has told a court that the prostitute he hired turned into a donkey overnight, and now he is "seriously in love."
Sunday Moyo, 28, was caught having sex with a donkey early Sunday morning, according to the New Zimbabwe news website. While appearing in court on bestiality charges, he told the magistrate a tale that reportedly "had the court in stitches."
Police said they found Moyo having sex with a donkey tied to a tree outside his home in Zvishavane, a mining town near Masvingo, on Sunday at around 4 a.m., the New Zimbabwe says.
In court, Moyo admitted to the sex act, but explained that the donkey was in fact a prostitute he had earlier hired for $20 at a local nightclub.
"I don’t know how she then became a donkey," Moyo is reported to have told the court. "I only came to know that I was being intimate with a donkey when I got arrested."
The experience appears to have been a sexual awakening for Moyo, who now says he is in love with the beast.
"I do not know what happened when I left the bar, but I am seriously in love with [the] donkey," Moyo said, according to state-run newspaper The Herald, as cited by Agence France-Presse.
Moyo will remain in custody until Thursday. The magistrate has ordered that he be examined by psychiatrists.
Not afraid to say "It".

Kevin Smith got dead threats over his "Dogma" movie, and it was a simple flick with a poop monster in it.
