Vacant Building Across from Town Centre Mall Kelowna

Post by paulo »

Hello, does anyone know what occupied the building across from Town Center Mall? Some people say Sears, some say Woolworths.

It's been vacant for almost decade, if not very close. Normally my memory is sharp as a tack, pretty sure it was Woolworth's (before The Bargin Store)

It was the Bargain Store and a Woolworth before that I think.

Its actually that whole block of Bernard, plus a parking lot behind the alley..
It opened around 1967 as Woolworths..which had been just east of Blenz, corner of Bernard and Water.
Used to be a shack across the road that sold ice cream..Dairy Queen...looked much like the old Burger Baron...
I'd like to help You OUT,

If memory serves me correct, Dairy Queen was over more - on the highway, which was eventually bought and turned into the now closed Carl's Jr. The old Super Valu with the curved glulam beam construction was across from Woolworth's where part of Town Center Mall is now. The Old Spaghetti Factory/Dabbers Bingo was across on the corner at Bertram where Shopper's Drug Mart is now. Mr. Mikes was just up from Woolworth's at the corner of Bertram, and is now a vacant parking lot.

No matter what the building may be repurposed for, the major issue will always be parking. The last time that building was in use we still had angle parking on Bernard. With the elimination of that there are even fewer options. I wonder how much that comes into play with the fact it's sat vacant for 6+ years now.

How about a wrecking ball?

The owners must be holding out.

Ive seen the remediation process on lots that were previouly gas stations sit dormant for less time.

I think it is/was owned by the Aquilinies from Vancouver, and a commercial/condo tower was planned, but the inability to go underground for parking cost-efficiently hindered the profitability of the development, hence the sitting empty.

That is a different development two blocks down - http://www.aquilinidevelopment.com/proj ... elowna.php

The lot is listed for sale for 9.4 million, which seems rather steep: http://www.hmcommercial.com/our-listing ... Kelowna_BC
