Weather Warning or Fear Mongering?

Post by gardengirl »

I have to wonder about all the predictions of doom and gloom for this week. The severe weather warning has just been lifted by Environment Canada, but not before people have cleared bottled water off the shelves and packed provisions for the apocalypse.

Doesn't anyone remember how inaccurate the weather forecasts are? I am not minimizing what has already happened, but it seems like there is a lot of panic being caused by people like Mayor Colin Basran and others who are advising people to prepare for the worst.

I think the intentions are in the right place. The possibility for severe flooding is there - should the weather predictions materialize. I think any formal announcements such as that made by the likes of Basran should include a mention of that fact. Prepare for the worst, hope for the best - but don't run around shouting the sky is falling.

Here is website that will assist those concerned about rainfall:
https://flightplanning.navcanada.ca/cgi ... peDoc=html

For precipitation click on PCPN > then click on Kelowna > then click on > Submit. To find Kelowna go about 1 cm below center red dot & to the left a bit. If you can recognize the shape of Okanagan Lake then finding the Kelowna area should be easy.
Along the top of the image is the ability to put it in motion.
I don't give a damn whether people/posters like me or dislike me, I'm not on earth to win any popularity contests.

I just checked the Environment Canada webpage and the special weather statement is still in effect. They cancelled the thunderstorm watch, but are still warning about flooding.

Maybe the website is behind the source you have?

These rain events are normal, not a perfect storm or a 200 year event. 150 years ago when these events happened the water simply soaked into the parched ground and rehydrated. Today we direct the water from our paved parking lots, roof gutters etc, into storm sewers and ditches which pump directly into creeks, streams and ultimately the lake. There fore the weather does not cause flooding, humans do. We are the author of our own story, deservedly so.

Have you been around to the affected areas ?
I'd say there are hundreds of families facing doom and gloom right now.

People seem to be misinformed about the high water levels and flooding....rain is only ONE factor.
Waters were rising this morning, before we had a drop of rain.

The storm was not supposed to hit us until this evening...which, as I look out my window, it seems is happening.
Today's rain was not THE weather system.

BTW - the news was all stating very clearly - Prepare for the worst and hope for the best.

Better to have people on high alert and volunteers out there sandbagging vulnerable areas ahead of any more damage than to have another storm take people by surprise.

So - keep up with the warnings and updates media people....there are many people who stand to lose a lot tonight and I can guarantee you that they are not scoffing at any rain or flood warnings right now.

I believe it's forecasting guilt. How many times have we had a massive dump of snow or a huge wind storm or huge rain storm that they failed to forecast, and then a few days later they try to make up for it by predicting the huge event they just missed, and it never happens? I've seen it time and time again, and I can't think of a single time where the second forecast wasn't exaggerated. Once the politicians get involved, the exaggerations have reached new heights. Don't get me wrong, I think we'll get some rain, and rivers will rise, but it will not be like it was last week.

I think there are also people taking advantage of the situation with stuff like this.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AkW-EAkClbE

Rations? Really?

I never said there were not properties at risk and people who will be in trouble. However; the media and politicians are making this sound like the City needs to prepare for WW3. Of course Colin Basran will be there for any possible photo op.

Hope for the best, prepare for the worst. I sincerely hope it's fear mongering.
