There were insinuations. May not need to prepare for the worst but maybe we should. Wouldn't all those affected now be glad of the opportunity to have been prepared better.tsayta wrote:Garden girl did not say that

Perhaps I should have been more clear. Of course there are areas of town which are and will be affected. I was referring to the somewhat over the top announcements made by some news agencies and public figures.
I have seen people getting sandbags and provisions who are literally miles away from any water source. Resources are being used up by people who have very little chance of being impacted in any significant way.

Okay, I understand now. Sandbagging is tedious and hard work and necessary for those in areas that are affected. When your back is sore, your legs giving out, water is where you don't want it to be, I just don't want to hear about fear mongering. No one has control over the weather but really I'd rather have the worst predicted and be prepared than flip a finger and say "oh well" and get the worst.

Not over the top at all. The lake is full. Think of a measuring cup you have to add more water to.
The water coming down stream from the snow melt is just starting at this time of year and will continue for the next month. Every warm day will bring more water later at night. Remember - the lake is already full...
Our lakes and streams have always been able to handle the runoff. But not this year - because the lake is full already. I don't think the EOC is exaggerating.

If 10% of the people over panic and 90% of the people have help getting prepared, it's all good.

Re: Weather Warning or Fear Mongering?
Look, the reason this was over the top fearmongering is that the Mayor and others insinuated that the flooding was going to get WORSE, even to the point of forecasting a 200 year flood event. This was complete bull crap. I looked at the forecast myself, and says to myself (and posted on several time on Facebook and Castanet) that I could make some money with bets here because the forecast does not say what Mr. Basran says it says. It was not a lot of rain (10 to 20mm), and the temperatures were forecast to TANK!
The media and politicians completely ignored this fact because it wouldn't fit their narrative that the flooding was going to get worse. Well they got their 15 minutes of national fame over this, and the mayor has the gall to lie by stating that the forecast rains did not materialize. Utter bunk. The rainfall warnings in the province was up the Peace, but not in the Okanagan or elsewhere in southern BC. We had a risk of thunderstorms, which tend to be isolated. And we got those plus the forecast 10 to 20 mm rain.

- Vernon = 17 mm
Kelowna (UBCO) = 10 mm
Summerland = 17 mm
Penticton = 15 mm

More rain possibly on the way:

"That said the potential still exists for rising water levels across the Central Okanagan, as ongoing showers and possible thundershowers combine with melting snow in the higher elevations to boost creek and stream flows and levels of all area lakes," the centre said early Friday.

Re: Weather Warning or Fear Mongering?
I've seen this morning's Mission Creek headwaters snow pillow data. Here are the facts...
-About 10% of the snow pack has melted
-Even the leftover remaining snow is much more than the average peak and is there much later than average
-The forecast temperatures for the next while is average or below average
-The longer this melt is delayed, the higher the probability of a stretch of hot weather arriving and causing an 'all at once' melt
That is not fear mongering

That's what happened back in 1972 (In my part of the Okanogan.) There was a ton of snow in the mountains and at the end of May it suddenly got blazing hot. Thankfully my grandpa brought a rowboat to our house so I could go out row down Highway 97.

Yes it's interesting you mention that. The records show that there was a year when the snow pack was 25% bigger than today and didn't start melting until end of May. I can't tell what year it was.... Glacier probably knows

Re: Weather Warning or Fear Mongering?
Global bc news just panned a web cam shot of grouse mountain in North Vancouver. Full snow top of the peak to the cut. Fully ski-able by the looks of it. That is very unusual, a few years back they were struggling with snow even mid winter
