Again The Hate for Hot Air Ballooning

Once again, Castanet has given Bruce Hedmann a soapbox to promote inaccuracies and untruths regarding hot air ballooning and this hot air balloon company in particular. Come on already with the apparent hate for hot air balloons - especially the one owned by this operator.

Its like hes watching the Hindenburg...

I think a balloon would be less damage then a plane when landing on your front lawn

People don't trust things they don't understand. This guy doesn't understand how a hot air balloon works and instead of educating himself, he chooses to spew out his misinformation. Happens everywhere. He offers no reason as to why he thinks they are unsafe other than "I still question how this person can be landing their hot air balloon in a residential neighbourhood. [It] looks like he is going to land on someone's house, very dangerous".

"Koy Klempner with Okanagan Ballooning."

Yeah, pretty sure the lady's name is Joy, not Koy.

I watched the balloon take off from near my place early this morning, and the neighbor's kids were marveling at the sight. I too am not understanding the sensationalism behind all these balloon stories.

This guy gets it:

https://www.castanet.net/news/Letters/2 ... et-over-it

Why is it that every hot air balloon landing that is not in the middle of an open field makes headlines in our local news?

A hot air balloon is allowed to land just about anywhere the pilot sees fit, without putting his passengers and himself in danger. That goes for residential areas, near airports, if there is no other place, on the parking lot of a mall or even on a road.

Why does it have to be called an emergency if it isn't one? Because it sounds more important, sells better, gets more attention and because we just love to put negativity onto anything we can.

And don't forget those dramatic comments from people nearby who are shocked or see things that aren't. And so far, the last three reported "non-regular" landings have been downgraded to just about normal.

Has anybody ever been in Albuquerque? There, the people come out of their houses and help pack up the balloon, motorists wait until they can drive again. No police, no fire department, just an everyday occurrence.

I enjoy seeing the balloons floating around. I have seen a couple that have landed in strange locations, but have never heard of any that have caused any damage.

Personally I think it’s just a matter of time that something is going to go terribly wrong with this guy and his balloon and hope some innocent person doesn’t get killed or injured.

WHY would you HOPE that something bad happens to other people. Unless you are referring to me giving birth to twins......?
NOW that is worthy of a "go fund me page", since I am male.

What was your total loss in $$$$. Did you file a claim? Did you ask the balloon company for lost income? Can you prove anything that you have just stated? Any photos?

No trespassing signs are really hard to see from 2000 feet above.

Hot air balloons can run into problems. My parents house in Rutland was hit by a hot air balloon (before Castanets time). It bumped their house roof then landed on the road in front. It ended up breaking a bunch of the roof trusses. They had power poles and lines in that neighbour too, but just missed them by luck. My parents insurance sued the balloon company for the damages. It was quite the scene. They hit the house, landed on the road in front, then raced to pack up and get out as fast as they could. So I would be nervous to have them floating low above my neighbourhood too.

Accidents do happen - however they are like plane crashes - rare in comparison to the number of flights taken daily. Castanet, and the aforementioned Bruce Hedmann however make it seem like every balloon landing is a major catastrophe with heavily over-dramatic reporting - not to mention inaccuracies.
