Is this the end of Inn from the Cold?

Postby Scrobins94 » Sep 8th, 2018, 11:51 am

Kelowna’s Inn from the Cold homeless shelter still hasn’t found a new home, and it is desperately seeking a new space to house its 45 citizens.

If it can’t find a new location when its lease expires at the end of the month, Inn from the Cold warns the number of people living on Kelowna streets will increase by 25 per cent.

Inn from the Cold is looking for anything at this point, but it would prefer a 2,500 square-foot or larger warehouse-type facility with one large open room in an industrial part of town. It needs minimal kitchen facilities and is looking for a one-year lease with the opportunity to extend.

Inn from the Cold officials are vowing that they will be good neighbours to area businesses.

“While possible locations have surfaced, the owners of the space are reluctant to lease to us once they realize we shelter the homeless,” executive director Jan Schulz said in a press release. “The Inn recognizes the need to minimize impact on the surrounding community and is prepared to do whatever it takes to be a good neighbour.”

The facility has a set of rules that it believes makes it a good neighbour. There are set hours for guest intake so people aren’t coming and going at all hours, there is a side or rear guest entrance to keep the front street clear and daily cleaning both inside and outside the building.

Anyone who can help is urged to contact Schulz at [email protected].

The landlords are well aware of the issues associated with having the clientele in the area, and don't want to anger the current businesses. This facility has earned a reputation, and there is nothing they can do to repair it.

I don't think that's near big enough. (I could be wrong)
I could wake up early tomorrow and go running, or I could win the lottery...the odds are about the same.

I most certainly hope that it doesn't close for good and something comes up for them!
If I had any property to donate I would...If I ever win the lottery I will absolutely figure something out for more affordable housing :)

If you watched CHBC News last night, you would know that some of those staying there are essentially 'the working poor' and few who simply have no where to live - not necessarily those with an addiction or addictions...

I still find it is so very unfortunate that some just automatically make assumptions and jump to conclusions without getting their facts straight....

The past and present clients have tarnished inn frim the colds reputation, they are constantly on the news being harped on from other business owners in the area. You honestly think someone wants to lease to them?

To clarify - I was pointing out what was on the news last night and the 'you' I was referring to were those reading posts on the forum.

I would and could not have any idea about 'what other posters feel' as I am not them nor did I state any such assumption/judgment or representation.

The 'some' I referred to in my last statement obviously did not mean everyone and did not necessarily mean those even posting on this forum at the time.

Everyone creates a 'segway' into a topic the instant they post, particularly depending on the manner in which they respond and the reader's feelings at the time.

That being said, shall I assume from your response to my post that you are having a bad day or are just grumpy?....If so, I hope your day gets better and I appreciated reading your interpretation of my statements

Until they can control those who use these services better I don't think anyone is willing to offer a piece of property for Inn From The Cold.
Did you see what they did to Sutherland and the surrounding businesses/area? I'm sure Peter at loblaws has had a not so great experience either. I don't hate homeless, I've been homeless...but plenty of those who use such resources have self inflicted circumstances.

If those who utilize shelters could follow rules and expectations, and conduct themselves in an orderly fashion, they probably wouldn't be in the situation they're in.

Some think that the demise of resources like this will help Kelowna's troubles. The individuals who use these shelters aren't simply going to disappear. They'll just be on the streets 24 hours a day instead of 12-14.
My fervent hope is that you and your tax dollars will be reunited in the afterlife.

There is no "one fix fits all" for the people who have been using Inn From The Cold. That should be abundantly obvious to even the most ill informed of our citizens. There are several categories of people being served by that facility, as has been suggested by other persons who have responded in this thread. Non-addicts who have jobs, and who are there because they have no other option; persons who suffer from mental illness and can't find or hold onto jobs; and addicts who are involved in crime to support their addictions. Trespassing, threatening behavior, aggressive panhandling and other crimes have done the damage.

I used to volunteer at IFTC and every night it was a complete :swear: show in there. People showing up at intake drunk outta their skulls after doing some job for labour unlimited or constructive solutions then picking fights with everybody else staying there and butting in line when dinner is ready cause they think they are more important. Junkies shooting up right outside the building and other lowlifes destroying the bus shelters and vandalizing neighbouring businesses. The thrift store on the ground floor constantly bitching about the mess in their doorway, security from capri mall constantly having to kick them outta the mall. People who live in the area always coming to the door looking for their bike or property that was recently stolen from their vehicle. I could go on and on about this place!!!! Jan Schulz you reap what you sow so stop playing the victim, your promise of being a good neighbour is falling on deaf ears.
