Every year they slack off around the holiday season. I also predicted that once IFTC got that extension past the original October 31st deadline that they'd probably just get extensions all through to the spring. It's gonna suck because once spring hits again all the transient people will be visiting Kelowna once again. 2018 was by far the worst year for homeless, transients, junkies that I've ever seen. So much that I even had firsthand experience being assaulted in Downtown. I suspect 2019 might be even worse. Let's hope not. There is some hope if we continue the work on the Journey Home strategy.

Yup another 3 week extension I heard this morning. I think you're right...this will drag on until the Spring because no one has the will to pull the trigger here. And yes it will almost certainly get much worst this year.

Joy!!! Three more weeks of them terrorizing the neighbourhood.[/quote]

What are you even talking about ?

Are you under some impression that mental institutions are only useful when 100% effective.
Or the mentally ill are better off on the streets?

What an odd post.

Sarcasm is a tool for the weak.

I'm talking about the many examples from history where simply isolating mentally ill folks in mental institutions resulted in even more trauma and social disconnect ... compounded by abuse of the staff... And rather than resulting in reintegration, this created violent offenders. The point is moot though, where you gonna put these institutions? NIMBYS everywhere will protest them in their neighbourhoods. "Sarcasm is the lowest form of wit but the highest form of intelligence"

NIMBY's wont complain if these facilities are built where they belong.. and where they belong is out of major urban centers.. like what Riverview was. away from society, so they can LEARN how to be productive members of society, get the help they need, then when ready, return for a full, real life.

The problem with the old way of mental institutions was, they became dumping grounds for those that were neither criminal or insane (For example, Alzheimer's or Epilepsy patients.) Mental institutions were overused and abused. They were eventually used for housing those with Tuberculosis patients.
They were also abused by criminals, who were looking for an easier incarceration sentence.

I am not faulting anyone for this, we/they just didn't have access to modern pharmacology that we have today.
Are we perfect yet ? No, there is still a great distance to go yet. We are getting there.

How are we “getting there” when it’s clear the processes, programs and facilities have been walking backwards for years? Never before have there been so many in need of treatments that do not exist or are not obtainable by those most in need? The province literally dumped thousands onto the streets when it cancelled the programs and facilities providing them years ago. It’s a big reason imho things are in the current state they are.

I agree with you 100%, IFTC is bolted in until spring.
Now who wants to wager on Agassiz Rd. ? The City Council meeting on Jan.17 is nothing but pie-filler to allow area residents blow off some steam regarding their concerns but it's a done deal IMO & it will be built regardless

It's a job creation program & big money for a select few, they don't want people to actually get healthy.

They should just build a new IFTC shelter in 2025 Agassiz Rd if the NIMBYs continue opposing the new proposed supportive housing.

You could build a shelter in the middle of the forest and the clientele staying there would find something to steal or vandalize !!!

I wouldn't take that bet at 50/1 odds.

Isn't it curious that we ONLY hear from one side of story? We never hear from the property owners, just from IFTC. They are milking it from week to week, month to month. They are looking for some benefactor to jump in at the last minute and save them all.
They have not been lining up to help because there are no tax breaks or they will just anger and loose tenants from other holdings that they have been acquiring rent from.
I don't blame them, one little bit.
