Raising the cost at the landfill

Raising the cost at the landfill

Postby edgar » Dec 11th, 2018, 7:47 am

I don't know what is wrong with the Kelowna city council if they haven't figured out why the garbage haulers and the ones that continue to head for the bush with their pickup trucks and dump trailers most likely they just don't want to pay the high cost at the landfill as myself and many outer truckers see this happen quite often I have called to report vehicles in areas but have never heard of any of them being cought so my point is that if you keep raising the prices at the landfill it will just get worse

Orrrr, the city could set landfill prices sufficient to cover expenses, rather than subsidize people who will spend $30 in gas to avoid spending $10 at the landfill.

https://www.regionaldistrict.com/your-services/waste-reduction-office/disposal-locations/glenmore-landfill.aspx

Things of note on the price list from above, $12.50 a matress and $10 a tire. A set of tires and a mattress (which is what is found in the bush frequently) will then cost $42.50 and a 20 minute ride to the bush (20 km away max @ 15L/100km) costs $4.

I don't agree with the people who are :cuss: going up to the woods to destroy it and litter but I also understand the issue with the cost. We can subsidize everything else in this town with taxes but not the landfill to help reduce garbage? If it only cost $5 a trip for residential people then we would see much less dumping.

If you can afford to generate enough trash that the quantity of mattresses you turf is becoming cost-prohibitive, then you can afford the damn fee.

I find the bush-trash kind of people are somewhat intellectually-deficient on a good day.

How else do you expect them to cover costs for things like state of the art offices at a landfill for employees? Typical city of Kelowna - gotta have the best of the best.

I don't get the fee for tires. Why Is there an enviro fee on tires?

Yeah, everyone agrees but it's not real life. People dump stuff in the woods. The goal of mobile junkie vans was to stop needles being found everywhere.... Funny how the logic changes for dumping garbage.

Every time I get new tires, the shop takes care of the old ones, and that’s the fee’s purpose. Cletus and his buddies collect garbage and redistribute it because they’re not firing on all cylinders.

I see a theme here: People with addiction and mental health illnesses can’t deal appropriately with their trash. Cletus and his buddies need therapy.

It's not the state of the art building, it's just a building. And before they built this they spent decades in portable offices.

Besides, Kelowna dump has lowest dump fees of all landfills in Okanagan.

If all it takes to avoid the landfill is a $1 increase in dumping fees then we are in more trouble than I thought.
I think that illegal dumping is driven more by the fact that the distance from new construction in South Kelowna to the Glenmore Landfill than it is by the actual cost of dumping. The creation of a transfer station for construction waste would encourage dumpers to not dump in the bush.

And everytime I change my old tires at home I have to pay $10 a tire to dump it myself. You don't understand the fee.

LMAO you pay TWICE.
http://www.tsbc.ca/ecofee.php
For every new tire sold, the retailer remits to TSBC an Advance Disposal Fee (ADF), commonly referred to as an eco-fee. All fees collected go exclusively towards the operation of the scrap tire recycling program and are used primarily to pay for transporting and recycling BC's scrap tires, so that they are disposed of in environmentally responsible ways.

The ADFs (Advance Disposal Fees) vary by tire type in order to adequately compensate for the higher cost of collecting and disposing of the varying tire sizes.

Not everyone has the equipment to remove tires from the rims, or are you throwing those away as well?

Anything that has an Eco fee charged when purchased should not be charged again to dispose of it. That's just BS!
