Funny....Angry letter from a kid that is at a school funded by a Religious institution that does not pay property tax...

Where else but Kelowna could you have "posters" on theses forums that will defend this tax increase along with the previous 4 years of increases. It appears accountability was never part of their lives and heaven forbid you question the current uneducated mayor and city council that has been out to lunch (paid for by their backers of course) for its existence.

With the pathetic voter turnout here I can only hope that 8 of the 9 elected will continuously walk around humming the theme song to MASH.

I didn't know a Grade 8 student could be so articulate...
Castanet has published on their "letters" page, a series of letters purportedly written by Grade 8 students of Kelowna Christian School
I have argued in reply and repeat here, the letters were were not composed and written by the students, but were in fact composed by someone much more articulate, their parents perhaps?..Perhaps the editors of the the letters page should vet the authours of their letters more closely.
I am waiting to see if my letter of rebuttal is published

It's tough to find more than a couple of examples of major Canadian cities that don't see regular property tax increases. It's not like Kelowna is unique in seeing tax increases.

Kelownaites, this tax % , according to figures released last year is paltry compared to what is needed. You will be chasing debt for decades, as will your offspring if they choose to dwell here. Costs will continue to rise exponentially until the next catastrophe. The unknown is what that catastrophe will be. Nuclear or financial?

If Kelowna built the water-way canal through the streets of downtown years ago like the said none of this would be a problem. Taxes would have decreased dramatically by now.

There is some interesting propaganda on the latest budget being pitched by the City of Kelowna on their social media feeds. The City tells us that the tax increases for the 2015 through 2019 have totaled 18.59% so they pitch, as if a great accomplishment, that the general municipal tax increase for 2019 is only 2.48% ….. the lowest it has been in five years. But there is more. They then pitch the introduction of a 1.95% infrastructure levy for 2019 and 2020 then “ongoing as a fixed amount” for a grand total tax in 2019 of 4.43%.

The City will be the first to admit most of the admitted infrastructure deficit has been created over the past 4 years. Now the citizens are expected to play catch up with an infrastructure levy for the ineptness of city council in their painting of a rosy picture of our city over the past four years while they diverted funds to pet projects and gifts to developers /special interest groups that support them.

The reality is that the infrastructure levy will continue forever, hence the spin “ongoing as a fixed amount”. From this point forward, the baseline acceptance for increases to property taxation including the infrastructure levy will be in the 5% or greater range.

That’s not all though. What the budget information also includes, but is not widely talked about, is the implementation of a brand spanking new storm sewer utility. Previously, all expenses related to capital investment, operation, maintenance and replacement of the storm sewer system were captured under general municipal taxation. Nothing has really changed in this as the current budget still includes $1.7 million for new storm sewer projects. Now instead of treating storm sewers where it always was under the general municipal budget, it will become a mandatory utility. The creation of the new utility is nothing more than smoke and mirrors to deflect attention from the municipal tax discussion while still picking citizens pockets. Furthermore, while the rates for this mandatory utility have yet to be disclosed, once they are, the math will prove out that this year’s real general municipal tax increase, will in all likelihood, top 10%.

The city must think citizens are gullible and not smart enough to see behind their propaganda curtains. Perhaps they think we are like children at the dinner table being fed something that tastes terrible so the trick is to feed it in spoon sized bites between the great tasting substances…… before you know it, everything on the plate is gone.

I for one would tremendously appreciate it if the City in their communications were forthright, honest and transparent so we could all engage in fruitful analysis of where our money comes from and goes, rather than use smoke and mirrors propaganda until it is too late for any real discussion.
