Cannabis Store in Lake Country

Cannabis Store in Lake Country

Postby ogopogie » Dec 18th, 2018, 7:56 pm

In reference to Castanet’s story about a cannabis store at Turtlebay Crossing:
https://www.castanet.net/edition/news-s ... htm#244891

I feel that Counc. Gambells concerns are ridiculous! Yeah, people are going to toss weed gummie beats at the kids at the daycare? No way! First, those things are very expensive and second, most cannabis users are responsible.

The people on this council are not representative of the members of this community. They seem to have the mentality of my great great grandparents but the idiocracy to keep increasing our property taxes to the point where if you can afford to buy here, it’s almost impossible to be anywhere near financially comfortable. The ignorant points of view of the majority of council including our Mayor (who should just friggin’ retire already) are keeping this community from being the best it can be.

Maybe if they thought reasonably about this cannabis store (especially with it being potentially the first one in the valley and the only one for the foreseeable future) they’d realize the potential revenue and see it as a way to pay for the firehall and other capital expenditures instead of raping the taxpayer wallets at every opportunity.

This has been a message from your local Liberal Party. It made me laugh as it is all about money when it comes down to it.

Seems as though DLC Council changed their view of things...

https://www.castanet.net/edition/news-s ... htm#244953

Another cannabis store has been officially added to the race for the first legal store in the Okanagan, after Lake Country council made a quick turnaround Tuesday night, approving its first store.

After council voted 4-3 to deny a variance application by Compass Cannabis Clinic earlier this month that would allow the company's Starbuds retail store within a 400-metre buffer zone of a nearby daycare, council received more than 20 letters of support for the store from members of the community.

Within 24 hours of the initial decision, Mayor James Baker had scheduled a second chance for the company to plead its case, and on Tuesday night, council voted 7-0 in favour of the variance application.

“There was a strong community outreach, a strong amount of support, and it was very vocal support,” said Dave Martyn, president of Starbuds and Compass Cannabis Clinics. “I've never heard cheering and applause at a city council meeting before.”

While Martyn was critical of council's initial decision, claiming it was made based on stigma rather than facts, he says they should be commended for being flexible.

“I think council of Lake Country delivered a message that they are open for business and they do listen to the voice of the people," he said. “There is a cannabis voice in the Okanagan, and it hasn't been necessarily heard or respected up to this point. I think last night was a message though that the voice is going to be heard."

Kelowna city council is currently reviewing 41 proposed cannabis stores, but stores aren't expected to open until early summer of 2019. Enderby also approved its first cannabis store Monday, while Summerland approved its first retail cannabis store last week.

The Lake Country clinic, located in the Turtle Bay Crossing development, has been under construction leading up to Tuesday's decision, and it will undergo a security inspection by the province later this week.

Martyn expects to open the doors in early January.

I don't know that 20 or so letters of support necessarily counts as "strong support" in a community the size of LC with 13,000+ residents, but in the end, it looks like there will be a place here for potheads to buy their weed come January. Given the new laws, I suppose its no different than having the Liquor Store in the same development.

It sure does if there were no letters or voices of opposition.

The article didn't mention if there were any, but that doesn't mean there weren't. In the end, its a legal substance and can be sold just like anything else. The question was more about being within the 400m buffer-zone to the daycare across the street. Personally, I comment Councillor Gambell for first "erring on the side of caution" when it comes to our kids, but also keeping an open mind towards her final decision.

forgive my ignorance, but can someone tell me why they are called dispensaries?
tell it like it is.. its a pot shop.
i kinda understand if it is medical, but for a legal pot shop to be called a dispensary sounds ridiculous

I agree, I don't think the patrons call it a dispensary do they? Just doesn't sound cool.

I could be wrong, but maybe it goes back when they were illegal? Calling it a Dispensary sounded better (legal?) than Pot Shop or Weed Store?
