Plans for Old RCMP Building (Post-Demolition)

Plans for Old RCMP Building (Post-Demolition)

Postby Scrobins94 » Dec 25th, 2018, 5:40 pm

Seems like this happened and went somewhat unnoticed by the media. The old RCMP Building has been demolished. Anyone know what plans are there in store for the site? A new community theatre or something cultural would be a great addition to the area. Something along the lines of entertainment or arts would be greatly welcomed.

What’s wrong with the current community theatre around the corner?

A 600 unit homeless shelter.

Build it, and they will come.

How about turn it into parking for trucks and boat trailers since the boat launch in right there and no parking anywhere close

I could see this happening, on a temporary basis until something else is decided on.

Part of the property will be used for a pathway. It will tie together the stretch of path beside the Japanese garden with the path beside the courthouse. One continuous corridor from Queensway to Cawston. Nothing proposed yet for the remainder of the land, but it seems like the east side of the lot would be cut off with this proposed pathway. Unless it would jog over and go alongside the library driveway, but then it would have to jog back to go behind Memorial Arena. The land is zoned for maximum 13 stories, but it will end up higher than that you wait!

The path already goes up by the library crosses on a crosswalk along the side of the arena as far as I know..

I'm going to guess it'll be another tower with a mix of commercial on the bottom and office/residential on the top. Hopefully the latter if that's the case. With Landmark 7 in the books I'd really love to see more residences before more offices.

I wonder if there will be enough parking, or if council will make an exception, and put growth ahead of already scarce parking.

The KCT has reached it's end-of-life and they've been talking about replacing it for a couple of years now ...

There hasn't been anything setup for the redesigned cultural district but they have done a couple of surveys to try and find out what people see happening ... since it's also in the covenant area I think that's also been slowing things down

It'll be nice when the path/trail goes all the way from the RCA to Kasugai without the twists and turns and driveways that it currently has...

For sure! Let's see .. I'm guessing that using the current formula for development here in Kelowna:

13 stories times a few variances of _____?, times ______ trips back to council with sob stories why more condo units vs whatever it was supposed to be ratio is needed______?, times _______ oops accidental story(s) added before being noticed it wasn't approved = probably somewhere in the neighbourhood of a final figure of 23 to 30 stories when all said and done :D ....
