Ontario firm to haul local waste

A newly incorporated Toronto waste collection company has won the right to do curbside pickup in Kelowna and in the rest of the Central Okanagan for the next decade.

Environmental 360 Solutions Inc. was selected last month by the City of Kelowna, which conducted a request for proposals on behalf of the entire region. Kelowna’s OK Environmental Waste Systems currently does the waste collection in the region, but its contract will expire on April 30.

Environmental 360 Solutions is a new company whose stakeholders include former Edmonton Oilers star defenceman Paul Coffey, but it is led by waste management veteran Danny Ardellini. The company currently does waste pickup in Ontario and in Alberta, and it has big plans for Kelowna.

“They’re expanding, and we’re very interested in having what they kind of termed as a flagship operation in British Columbia,” City of Kelowna purchasing manager Darren Tompkins said Monday. “So they were very eager to compete for our business and put forward, as it turned out with the evaluation, the most favourable offer to all of us. We’re very pleased and happy to have them been successful.”

I don't care who hauls it as long as the service we receive isn't further diminished. Specifically, I would not like to see biweekly garbage pick up or any more items removed from the recycling bin program, but I suspect it's only a matter of time.

That would certainly explain the apparent lack of maintenance on current refuse trucks. I don’t think a few of them would pass emissions testing from what I’ve seen.

I agree, a further reduction in recycling programs will be a huge step backwards, but certainly no surprise given the lack of effectiveness of the current one. Maybe they’ll actually help introduce some of the programs in place in Ontario.

There goes the halfway decent paying jobs that waste management provided. I have known a few who work there and they make decent money. Starting wage I hear for the new company is less than what they started at 8 years ago.

So much for supporting BC ?

No problem though everyone will see their garbage costs / tax drop big time, you'll get a 10 year guarantee.

I would like to see a company with more environmentally conscious garbage disposal system brought into the valley. We should do away with roadside pickup and bring in the bearproof bins in each neighbourhood and have central recycling depots set up where people are responsible for taking their recycling. It is ridiculous and doesn't make any sense having roadside pickup in towns that are in such a close proximity to our precious wildlife. Look at a couple other mountain towns such as Canmore and Banff where they have a bearproof bins, which are smithrite style containers in each neighbourhood and the residents simply use that for their household waste and drive their recycling to a space set up with bins for all recycling matter.

bears aren't that big of a problem here crows are in my garbage more than bears and it makes more sense to have roadside pickup than it does to have ten thousand cars idling away at transfer stations on Saturday mornings that sort of thing will lead to more garbage dumped in the woods

All those that don't agree with this, I hope you feel the same way when a Kelowna company bids and wins contracts out of town as well. I doubt you will though [icon_lol2.gif]

Hopefully the new company will be sporting B.C. plates on their vehicles, not like the dozens of entrepreneurs in this town with Kelowna phone numbers, addresses and Alberta plates. This includes a large five point maintenance company that has gobbled up countless City contracts with half of their fleet still bearing Alberta plates.

Too bad.

The guys from OK who serviced our neighbourhood have been friendly and thorough. One even stops and gives our dog a cookie (with our permission, of course).

I'm sure we will miss the personalized touch that the OK guys have brought.

Even if they do hire some of the existing drivers the guys will lose a significant chunk of their income. This isn't an area where many have that luxury and still be able to make ends meet.
