One million stolen

First Hospice then Schools & now Access, so what's next ?
Now it's claimed a Million that might have wandered off ? I'd never heard of Access Resources until this news came about & the excuses made are so unbelievable ?

Is this problem occurring because these accounts contain way too much money are not regularly checked & even if the people taking the money do get caught they know nothing is going to happen to them ?

I don't think serving jail time and ordered to pay back funds is "nothing" as has happened in other cases. Good chance the same will happen here.

Worse than first reported?

A social-services agency that works with developmentally disabled people in Kelowna says it has lost $2.74 million in funds embezzled by its former bookkeeper.

In court documents filed in November, Access Human Resources Inc. claims Carey Earl misappropriated the money between 2005, when she first started working for Access, to October 2018, when her employment was terminated.

400,000 over 13 years is 30K a year. Not a big wage and certainly reasonable.

Stealing a crap ton on top however is terrible. I've done work for people and companies that fight tooth and nail the controls I want to bring in, but it is those controls that prevent these things. Never give the bookkeeper/accountant bank access, PERIOD....it's a licence to steal and too few are good people and won't do it.

"but i trusted them" is the worst line I ever see in news articles. Trust doesn't matter in an accounting position, it's a bonus AFTER you have set controls that don't let this happen.

"do what you have to and I'll plead guilty"....screams...moneys gone and sue all you like you'll never get it back. Couple years in jail, best annual earning ever for a million......

Make controls and use them people, the only bookkeepers mad about it are the ones mad they can't skim anymore, the others approve of proper procedure.

What types of controls are you talking about? Other than not giving accountants/bookkeepers access to bank accounts?

Just stop putting money into these accounts, it's obvious the temptation to steal it overrides their moral compass.

If they ever had one ?

I thought that anytime you get government funding, you have to have at least an audit to satisfy them. What happened here?

In a statement, the executive director of Access Human Resources, Cliff Andrusko, said the alleged fraud has not impacted the operations or service delivery provided by the organization to people with disabilities.

Any one else find it strange that an agency that loses $2.74M says it has not impacted the operations or service.

My thought is how much money does this agency waste if $2.74M doesn't affect them, and where do they get their funding.

Maybe a wider review of their funding/spending is needed.
Just because it is a Bad idea doesn't mean it won't be a Good time.
