What is city spraying?

What is city spraying?

Here is a curious letter to the editor: Any ideas what spraying oil on the roads might be all about?

What is the city spraying on our roads?

I drove to work the other day and later had to drive home to retrieve something. When I left my office, I looked at the ground around my vehicle and was surprised to see oily drip marks on the asphalt. I was miffed thinking someone had parked a leaky old truck in my parking spot.

I drove home, and while there took some kitty litter to soak up the oil on my parking spot at work. But when I went out into our carport, I realized it was my vehicle that was dripping black oil from the undercarriage.

Alarmed and thinking it was a broken brake line or something major, I called Toyota, who advised me not to drive the vehicle, but to have it towed to them, which we did.

In the meantime, back at work, I happened to notice that my co-worker’s car had oil drips around it, too. We both drove the same road (Longhill) within minutes of each other, and both of us had seen a spray truck.

When I called Toyota, I was told they had good news. I told them I had weird news. As it turns out, I wasn’t the only one who had this experience. They had already had another person in that morning with exactly the same issue. There was nothing wrong with my truck.

Toyota said the entire underbody of my vehicle was covered in oil. They had to powerwash it to get it clean – and yes, they said it was oil.

I wonder if anyone else has had the same experience? What is the city using on our roads before it snows.

What is the city using on our roads before it snows.

Answer:
When the forecast calls for a greater than 70 per cent chance of snow, or when the temperatures mean icy roads could develop, we apply liquid magnesium chloride or liquid sodium chloride to some of the main arterial roads and hillsides. These liquids prevent snow from bonding to the road surface and make it easier to plow the roads clear. As we only have two trucks capable of carrying liquids, it is not possible to do all roads.

City of Kelowna website

-maybe the spray truck wasn't a city truck
-maybe the truck was leaking oil - a lot of oil
-maybe the spray truck applied calcium chloride too heavily creating an oily film

Answer: the same stuff they use for chemtrails.

Now they are controlling your mind from the bottom up!

Whatever cocktail they are using, it's nasty *bleep*. It makes the road surface slippery, and the ooze dripping off my vehicle in the carport yesterday was staining the concrete.

Let's just get back to what worked for 50+ years, salt and sand, mkay?

I read that if calcium chloride is applied too heavily, it can create an oily film. I'm adding that to my previous post.

Technically it is a chemtrail on the road.

They have been doing this in Kelowna for a long time now and I suspect this road got an extra heavy spray for some reason.

Nothing to panic over.

I've noticed them doing a lot of spraying lately. I always say to my self looks like were expecting some snow. However when I check the forecast nothing is expected. Would appear to me someone's trying to use up an over abundance of supply due to the mild winter this year. And yes they spray a lot. Infact so much its slippery and can be dangerous. Gotta keep that budget up I suppose

The spraying never made sense to me. Forecasts are often wrong and if it snows more than a few centimeters it doesn't work they have to plow anyway.
So literally the only time this really works is if a forecast of 1-2 cm is actually accurate.
Seems like a huge waste of money make work project to me?

Works at different temperatures than salt, doesn’t rust vehicles as badly, as isn’t intended to Mel the snow entirely, rather to make it easier to plot road clean.

What else should the city snow plow workers do when there is no snow?

A decent chance it is Beet Juice.
It's dark and sticky, does look like oil.
Easiest clean up is baking soda and warm water.

Not really a fan as it gives a false 'tell' by appearance.
very shiny.

Also the residue from road spray on ones windshield smears and leaves
a rainbow effect when encountering oncoming lights.

They are city workers that have other things they can do around the city. It's not like all the workers are sitting in a building waiting for it to snow so they can plow.

Salt is not so good for fresh water fish in Okanagan Lake. Salt doesn't work in our cold temperatures.
Also
When temperatures fall to 10 to 20 degrees, the action of the salt (which lowers the freezing temperature of water) takes longer to work. Wet pavement refreezes at a much faster rate. The melting of ice and snow with the dilution of the salt between zero to 10 degrees accelerates refreezing even more.
If at first you don't succeed, skydiving is not for you.
